The Hobart Humane Society reported that they experienced small electrical
fire during the week of June 18. Sparks flew from the shelter’s breaker box
during hours of operation but everything was controlled and damage appeared
to be minimal. Upon further inspection by professionals however, the shelter
staff learned that they would need to replace all of the wiring and lighting
throughout the building.
The humane society, located at 2054 East State Road 130 in Hobart, risks not
passing code inspections if the necessary repairs are not completed. They
said they have already repaired what caused the accident in the first place
but the rest of the repairs are being postponed until they can raise more
“We narrowly escaped a major catastrophe,” Connie Spencer-Hollar, who works
at the shelter, said. “This is very costly for us, so we are looking to our
supporters for cash donations.”
To help with the efforts, a fundraiser has been arranged at Cici’s Pizza off
of Central Avenue in Portage on July 28 from 12-9 p.m. People who go to eat
at Cici’s pizza buffet that day will be able to drop their receipt into a
basket, and at the end of the day, Cici’s Pizza will donate 10 percent of
all of the collected receipts to the shelter. This is a service that Cici’s
Pizza offers to any not-for-profit in the area.
Shelter staff and volunteers are hoping for a big turn out and will even be
on site for the whole nine hours to let their presence and the seriousness
of the situation be known. People wishing to help the shelter or learn more
about the fundraiser can call the shelter at (219) 942-0103, visit their
Website at or visit their FaceBook page.
