“Car Talk for Women”

To help women better understand how to take care of minor car repairs, Porter Health System’s Healthy Woman Program will present an educational seminar entitled, “Car Talk for Women.” The program will begin at 6:30 pm, on Wednesday, Aug. 18, at Reeder’s Auto Center, 6436 Central Ave., Portage.

In this car clinic, Jeff Reeder will show participants the basics of good car care and the importance of car maintenance.

Porter’s Healthy Woman program is a free community resource designed to empower women with the knowledge and confidence to make informed healthcare and well-being decisions for themselves and their loved ones. Program benefits for members include monthly health and lifestyle presentations, health resources and communications.

Senior Circle Program, “Getting Your 5-A-Day”

To learn how to creatively incorporate the daily recommended amounts of fruits and vegetables into your diet, join Porter’s registered dietitian Jill Kilhefner, RD, CD, as Porter Health System’s Senior Circle Program presents “Getting Your 5- A-Day.” The program will begin at 2 pm, on Tuesday, Aug. 31 at Taltree Arboretum and roundtrip transportation by bus is available for $2 per person. The bus will leave Porter’s Education & Rehabilitation Campus, 1401 Calumet Ave., Valparaiso, at 1:30 pm.

During the presentation, Kilhefner will uncover creative and delicious ways to increase the fruits and vegetables in your diet. “Not only is eating five or more servings of fruit and vegetables a day nutritionally sound,” says Kilhefner, “these foods are naturally low in fat and sodium, high in fiber and can help keep your blood pressure under control.” Recipes and samples of some of her ideas will be available.

Senior Circle Program, “Cholesterol – The Good, The Bad and The Ugly”

Do you ever wonder what your cholesterol numbers really mean? If so, this program is for you. Porter Health System’s Senior Circle Program will present an educational seminar, entitled “Cholesterol – The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.” The program will be held from 12:15 to 1 pm, on Thursday, Aug. 26, at Banta’s Village Park Enrichment Center, 605 Beech St., Valparaiso.

Participants will receive a free total cholesterol/HDL screening followed by a discussion of what those numbers mean.

Porter Health System’s Senior Circle Program will present “Shoulder Pain & Injuries” by Orthopedic Surgeon Anthony Levenda, MD. The program will be held at 6:30 pm, on Monday, Aug. 30, at the Portage YMCA, 3100 Willowcreek Road, Portage.

Dr. Levenda will discuss the treatment options for chronic conditions and injuries to the shoulder.
