You think that you want to adopt a cat. Before you adopt it is very important to consider if bringing a cat into your life is the right decision for you. Far too many animals are initially loved then neglected or even abandoned. This is because the owners decide – too late – that caring for a cat is more responsibility than they actually want.
Adopting a cat is a big decision and one that will affect your lifestyle for many years to come. Think about how the cat will be totally dependent on you for their entire life. With good care, most cats can live 15 to 20 years of age so it is critical that you consider what is likely to be happening in your own life before you adopt a cat.
Before you choose a cat to adopt, you also need to consider your needs and expectations. If you are a working family, you should probably pass on taking in kittens or young adolescents and instead adopt an adult cat whose energy level will be easier to meet.
If you are a novice cat owner, you should find a friendly outgoing cat as opposed to an excessively shy or aggressive one. If there are young children in the family, you may want to think before you bring a little kitten into the mix. You may find the children literally loving it to death because kittens are fragile little creatures. You might be better off getting an older cat, one that may have been around children.
A cat in your life can add warmth, humor and peace of mind, but do not adopt in haste. Take your time getting to know the cat and making sure it is the right fit for you and your family. It is sad to have these cats returned to the shelter after they have known a home and family.
It is very important that you let your cat be a cat. It is not a child or a dog. A cat does not come when called or sit when told. A cat’s unique ways make them the endearing creatures that they are.
Once you have thought all of this through and decided you do want to add a cat to your family, please know that you have rescued one of these wonderful creatures and they will show you their gratitude and love for years to come.
