Teachers Credit Union, chartered on June 12, 1936, serves those in Lake and Porter counties, along with six other surrounding areas. TCU was originally intended to serve the employees of the Gary Works, Carnegie-Illinois Steel Corporation, which later became known as U.S. Steel Gary Works, and their immediate families.

Their original name was Carnegie-Illinois Steel Employees Gary Works Federal Credit Union, which was shortened in 1983, and for the last 14 years they have operated as Teachers Credit Union.

The newest change for TCU came in the form of opening a new location at 302 Silhavy Road in Valparaiso.

“We chose the location for its proximity to many retail locations, and for the high level of traffic traveling through,” Gene Novello, TCU regional vice president, said.

“We felt that this location, in conjunction with our other Valparaiso branch, would provide the convenience our members deserve.”

Novello said that TCU is the largest credit union in Indiana, and one of the largest in the country, which gives them the ability to provide excellent service and peace of mind to their members.

“Our track record of success and high quality member service shows that after almost 80 years in business, and with new branches opening every quarter, we are here to stay,” Novello added.

A grand opening celebration for the new TCU branch was held on Sept. 28, and was attended by a variety of local leaders. Part of the celebration included cake and refreshments, as well as prizes and giveaways.

According to Novello, there are certain characteristics of TCU that separate them from banks and other credit unions.

“All of our branches offer personal, member-focused financial products and services designed to fit individual needs,” he said. “Everybody has different dreams and goals in life, and our desire is to help our members achieve those goals.”
