Come on in to Taltree’s Railway Garden Depot for a preview of the newest garden.

Santa asks that you save the following dates for a sneak peek at the trains that run through a spectacular garden planted along a miniaturized landscape of mountains and valleys, tunnels and rivers. Have your children’s photos taken with Santa for just $10. A sneak peek with Santa will take place from noon until 4 p.m. Dec. 18 and 19.

Taltree’s Railway Garden, set to open in spring 2011, is an outdoor G-gauge scale railway through a garden that engages visitors of all ages in exploration, discovery, and fun. The display will tell amazing stories of American railroads in the context of a large display garden. A wide-range of landscapes are carved into the 2.5-acre site, offering a visual sense of trains running through canyons, mountains and prairies.

Visitors enter and exit the Railway Garden through a 1920s-era railroad depot with vintage-style benches and panoramic views of the garden. Taltree’s Railway Garden will be the largest and most intensively-developed feature in the arboretum.

Because of its meticulous development and care, the project offers many opportunities to increase the varieties of plants in Taltree’s collections. Strategically-placed architectural limestone slabs form the varied topography perfect for specially-mixed soils and a variety of microclimates.

Taltree Arboretum & Gardens, located south of U.S. Route 30 between Merrillville and Valparaiso, is a 360-acre reserve of formal gardens, woodlands, wetlands and prairies. From hiking the miles of trails to attending an outdoor concert or special event, visitors have enjoyed Taltree’s quiet beauty interspersed with friendly festivity since 1999. As a public charity foundation, Taltree relies on donations from corporations, organizations and individuals.

Taltree is located at 450 West 100 North in Valparaiso. Admission to Taltree is $5 for guests, and free for Taltree members and children under 5. For more information, call 219-462-0025, visit www.taltree.org, or e-mail info@taltree.org.
