In honor of National School Counseling Week, which was observed from Feb. 7-11, the Porter County Career and Technical Center would like to thank and acknowledge the local guidance counselors who help students every day.

The career center serves students from all of Porter County, plus Hobart High School in Lake County. It offers 33 programs at 12 sites and depends heavily on high school counselors to help connect students with appropriate half-day programs.

School counselors play a significant role in fostering student aspirations, helping students overcome obstacles to learning, and ensuring that students are college and career ready. To do so, school counselors provide sound guidance regarding student choices, which might include school attendance, rigorous courses taken, diploma track selected and postsecondary, and career options pursued.

Area high school guidance counselors the Porter County Career and Technical Center would like to acknowledge include:

James Kammer, Doug Klukken and Stephanie Waldron ñ Hobart High School

Roberta Garcia, Maggie Hektoen, Jerry Wetmore-Kirby, Jeff Kolish and Gloria Zimmerman ñ Valparaiso High School

Michelle Dailey, Danielle Konopasek, Karen Moffett, Julie Roytan, Jennifer Thoms and Dianna Whitman ñ Chesterton High School

Lu Hannon ñ Boone Grove/Porter Township High School

Michelle Morris ñ Hebron High School

Jeff Edwards ñ Kouts High School

Diane Klikus ñ Morgan High School

Shirley Bustos, Earl Coleman, Carrie McGinty, Sheila Parker and Jennifer Symer ñ Portage High School

Diane Warren ñ Washington Township High School

Kim Lambka ñ Wheeler/Union Township High School

These are just a few of the professionals in Northwest Indiana who help students with all kinds of needs on a daily basis. Counselors in Indiana work with very large numbers of students and have very demanding jobs. There are many other dedicated counselors at area high, middle and elementary schools that deserve credit as well.
