For the third year, Calumet Park Cemetery and Funeral Chapel will have its Butterfly Release.

This year’s event will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 30, at the park, located at the corner of 73rd and Taft in Merrillville. The general public is invited; it is not necessary to have a friend or loved one at the cemetery; 225 live butterflies were released during last year’s program.

A Native American butterfly legend says you must capture a live butterfly and whisper a wish to it before releasing it to make your wish come true. As butterflies make no sound, your wishes are safe and can only be heard by the Great Spirit who knows and sees all.

The Great Spirit always grants the wish as you have given the delicate butterfly its freedom. As we release our butterflies locally, a prayer is sent to a higher power. Lawn chairs and blankets are recommended for viewers of this event.

Call 219-769-8803 or visit www.calumetparkcemetery.com for more events at the park.
