Nearly ten months after opening phase one of a $15.5 million Capital Improvement Project, the South Bend Airport is wrapping up phase two of the three phase project to expand the passenger concourse of the South Bend Airport. The project construction was designed in three phases to allow for uninterrupted operation of flights. Phase two, which began in November, 2010, extended the first phase of the new concourse area and added additional gates. Increased seating and airport directional signage has also been added during the second phase. The first portion of the new gate concourse opened on Nov. 17, 2010, and added more passenger seating and restrooms and marked the opening of the new post-screening dining facilities, business center and children’s play port, loading bridges and complementary wireless Internet access. The third and final phase will consolidate passenger screening operations to a single expanded location and feature an arching translucent panel roof and terrazzo flooring to provide a modern and brighter travel experience for airport patrons. Phase three comes with a few changes that SBN travelers need to be aware of. All passenger security screening will occur in a temporary checkpoint location at the old Terminal C checkpoint, north of the airport atrium. Passengers will clear security screening and be escorted from Terminal C, though a dedicated covered walkway and into the new main concourse area. In 2010, more than 626,000 origination and destination passengers used SBN. The final project will give Michiana travelers a new 45,000 square-foot concourse and will include five new gates, a consolidated security checkpoint, post-security food service amenities, gift shop, business center and children’s play area.
