The Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) of Indiana University Health La Porte Hospital is looking for volunteers interested in helping Hospice patients and their families in the La Porte County area.

All volunteers undergo up to 12 hours of training on the following dates: Friday, Sept. 16 at the VNA office from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. and Tuesday, Sept. 20 at La Porte Hospital from 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

Hospice provides compassionate care to individuals who are at the terminal stage of life, assisting with the physical, emotional and spiritual needs with an emphasis on pain and symptom management. Patients are allowed to live every moment with dignity and share quality time with family and friends.

Hospice volunteers will:
Visit a patient’s home to provide companionship;
Offer respite time (about two to four hours per visit) for the caregiver to rest, run errands…etc.;
Provide emotional support to the patient and family;
Perform small housekeeping chores;
Provide bereavement support to the family after the patient’s death.

Volunteers do not need to have a medical background in order to participate.

Indiana University Health La Porte Hospital, a part of Indiana University Health, has provided leading care to La Porte and the surrounding community for more than 100 years.

Registration is required. Call toll free 800-822-5378 or visit iuhealth.org/laporte.
