State Sen. Ed Charbonneau, R-Valparaiso, has been selected to participate in this year’s prestigious Henry Toll Fellowship Program sponsored by the Council of State Governments (CSG).

Charbonneau joined 47 others from across the nation Sept. 9 to 14 at the training event in Lexington, Ky.  He was the only Indiana official participating in this year’s seminar, which was to focus on trends analysis, policy development, media and constituent relations, leadership and institutional changes in state government.

“As a Toll Fellow, I will work with a geographically, ethnically and politically diverse group of leaders from throughout the nation to form new relationships that go beyond state and party lines,” Charbonneau said. “This experience will help stimulate personal assessment and growth as I develop new team-building and communication skills that I can bring back to Indiana and apply to my duties as a public servant.”

Charbonneau was nominated as a Toll Fellow by Lt. Gov. Becky Skillman. He was then selected from many outstanding applicants as one of the most promising leaders of state government by a committee of state elected and appointed officials.

Named in honor of a Colorado senator who founded CSG in 1933, the Henry Toll Fellowship Program seeks to develop the next generation of leaders from the three branches of state government.

This year’s applicant pool included state leaders from the legislative, executive and judicial branches of government and represented 42 states and two U.S. territories.

Past Henry Toll Fellowship graduates include governors, U.S. Senators, Supreme Court Justices, members of Congress and other leaders in state government.

CSG is the premier multi-branch organization forecasting policy trends for the community of states, commonwealths and territories on a national and regional basis. CSG alerts state officials to emerging social, economic, and political trends; offers innovative state policy responses to rapidly changing conditions; and advocates multistate problem-solving to maximize resources and competitiveness. The organization works to promote excellence in decision-making and leadership skills to promote and champion state sovereignty.
