Delegates from the Taiwan Agricultural Trade Goodwill Mission have signed a Letter of Intent to purchase Indiana corn and soybeans in 2012-2013.

“Indiana is glad to welcome the Taiwan Agricultural Trade Goodwill Mission to our state,” said Lt. Gov. Becky Skillman.  “Taiwan is an important food and agricultural trade partner to Indiana and we are delighted to continue to provide our high-quality corn and soybeans to our Taiwanese friends.”

Skillman led an agricultural trade mission to Taiwan in 2006. Indiana Agriculture Director Joe Kelsay signed the letter for the state, as Skillman was on another trade mission, to Japan.

The Taiwanese group included Taiwan’s Feed Industry Association Chairman Yau-Kuen Hung and members of the Vegetable Oil Manufacturers Association.

From the beginning of their Administration, Governor Daniels and Lt. Governor Skillman recognized the importance of strong relations with Taiwan. Taiwan, with the second highest per capita consumption of U.S. agricultural products in the world, imported 2.4 million tons (94 million bushels) of U.S. corn in the 2010-2011market year.

After taking office in 2005, Governor Daniels’ first trade mission was to Japan and Taiwan. Lt. Governor Skillman followed with the agricultural mission in 2006. The trade missions led to direct sales of Indiana products as well as relationships that later resulted in a food-buyers mission to Indiana.

“This agreement is another example of Governor Daniels’ and Lt. Governor Skillman’s emphasis on international trade and building relationships to bring dollars to Indiana,” Kelsay said. “The Lt. Governor’s trade mission to Japan and China also is promoting the state’s agricultural assets for future trade opportunities.”
