In a Men’s Health magazine article, I proposed a “Chocolate Milk Diet” that can help to remove some of our belly fat when consumed with a healthy diet.

Three-eight ounce servings of low-fat chocolate milk consumed when you wake up, just before exercise and immediately after exercise is most beneficial.

There are four reasons why chocolate milk can help us lose our belly fat:

1. The Calcium Effect: Calcium builds strong bones and it also affects the belly. Calcium has been shown to impede the body’s ability to absorb fat which keeps it off the belly. Dairy foods have been found to be the most readily absorbable calcium around. Three servings of chocolate milk provide the magical 1000mg threshold that translates into a loss of nearly 15 or more pounds of flab.

2. The Vitamin D. Factor: Vitamin D is necessary to experience the benefits of calcium. Vitamin D moves calcium from your food to your body and without vitamin D there is no benefit from calcium. The average American is probably not getting enough vitamin D and this is true in children as well. Symptoms of vitamin D deficiency include weak muscles, fragile bones, and depression. Our bodies manufacture vitamin D when we are exposed to sunlight, but most people are indoors too much. Chocolate milk is fortified with vitamin D. It is important to consume 1 percent of low-fat chocolate milk, as vitamin D will not work without a little fat to help break it down. Skip the whole milk as it has too many calories.

3. Endurance Boost: Exercise is necessary to lose the belly fat. However, drinking chocolate milk can improve the gains from exercise. Studies have found drinking chocolate milk can help people ride 49 percent longer on a stationary bike than those “who consumed a generic carbohydrate beverage. The subjects were even able to peddle harder. Milk has naturally occurring electrolytes that keep you hydrated-more hydrated than water and it helps to push more energy into your muscles.

4. Protein-Body-Weight Connection: More muscle helps you to stay thin. Muscle burns more calories than fat. With every new muscle your resting metabolism gets an increase in fat-burning energy. Research indicates an ideal protein load for building muscle is 10-20 grams, half before and half after a workout. Chocolate milk provides 8grams of protein in each cup which means one cup prior to exercise and one after the workout is great. A third cup of chocolate milk in the morning simply adds to the increased metabolism and burning of calories all day.
