A leader in specialized home health care for more than 10 years, locally owned and operated Anchor Home Health Care (AHHC) is among the top national companies in its area of medical expertise. With careful coordination among management and staff, a dedication to its patients and a focus on service, AHHC shows no signs of relinquishing its prominence in the area.
AHHC originally started off as a franchise office of Staff Home Builders in 1991 by owners Tim and Shelly Wilson. After seven years and multiple partners, the Wilsons eventually bought the franchise rights from Staff Home Builders and created AHHC. Its first office was located in Crown Point. However the company home base was relocated to Valparaiso in October 2009 to ease accessibility for employees. Servicing 12 counties from as far east as South Bend and across northern Indiana west into Chicagoland. AHHC found its employees were traveling too much. The move was made to help them. AHHC still maintains a satellite office in Crown Point.
AHHC is able to bring nearly all of the benefits of a hospital to the comfort and convenience of patients’ homes. AHHC essentially creates a hospital room in the home, with specialty pharmaceuticals, high-level ventilator care, administration of intravenous therapy, even delivering chemotherapy, among other medical treatments. Additionally, in a traditional hospital setting, nurses are often treating many patients in the same shift and patient’s exposure to multiple infections and germs can be high. In a home healthcare setting, this exposure is reduced because patients receive one-on-one health. It’s rewarding for the employees and the patients, said Tim Wilson, because while they are there in the homes, it’s one on one, there aren’t multiple calls to attend to. It’s completely focused.
“Our niche is in high-tech, long-term, health care, taking care of the high acute clients. We can provide as good if not better care inside your home,” said Tim Wilson. “Coming from the third-largest company in the country, we had national roots that set the ground work, helped us to land and maintain contracts. Even though we’re local, many of the programs we help maintain are national. We don’t really have the mom-and-pop feel. We established ourselves as a strong national foundation and it helped us set the tone for competitive pricing, our hiring and benefit packages.”
Often, clients, their families and loved ones appreciate the services provided by AHHC because it can provide 24-hour, high-skill nursing in the home which allows patients to receive care without traveling back and forth to the hospital. Patients can relax a bit more and enjoy the time spent with loved ones while being treated from home rather than in a hospital setting. The overall healthcare treatment is much more personal and intimate.
“We had one child patient who we were able to bring home and to be around her family for a period of time before she passed away from a brain tumor,” said Tim Wilson. “With the private live-in services we provide, we can allow an elderly loved one to stay at home as opposed to being moved to a facility. If any medical issues came about in the home we could help assist with those.”
AHHC is essentially a portable hospital capable of treating the same amount of patients as a 200-bed hospital with equal, if not safer, care from patients’ homes. It employs registered nurses, speech therapists, home aids, attendants, live-ins, licensed practical nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, medical social workers, home health aides and other health professionals. Through the years, AHHC has provided top-notch, personalized home healthcare to individuals ranging from prominent Chicago business CEOs to small children and even Michael Jackson’s grandmother.
“I’ve been told we’re one of the few agencies that will administer blood products in the home and high-level ventilator care to pediatric kids,” said Tim Wilson. “We’re also one of the few agencies who administer intrathecal pump infusions for pain management and muscle rigidity. We can go into the spinal area to keep the patients comfortable while they’re home,” said Tim Wilson.
AHHC is working to upgrade into full electronic charts and schedules to allow patients to interface with the company easier from their homes. The agency is also looking to expand to an additional location, potentially Indianapolis or the surrounding areas. AHHC is able to accept nearly every insurance payment source and offers free assessments and evaluation of patient care needs.
