Kovenz makes monuments for pet memories

Pets often develop into more than just an animal that families choose to share their home with; they become members of the family. That is why it is no surprise that pets are treated as a member of the family whenr they pass away.

Kovenz Memorial, 2404 Roosevelt Road in Valparaiso, also appreciates the special place pets hold in the hearts of their owners. Aside from bird baths and monuments, they specialize in granite and stone memorials, including pet memorials.

“We’ve got a history of doing community based projects” said Neil Davey, sales associate at Valparaiso Kovenz Memorial. “We did the carving at the veteran’s memorial for Swan Lake Park in Michigan City. We have also done a lot of etching works fro the bricks at veteran’s memorials and parks in Northwest Indiana.”

Davey said they often encounter individuals who want an engraved pet marker or other memorial. He said many people often request the name of their pet as well as a symbol to be placed on pet markers or benches that they then place in their yard or garden.

The newest service offered at Kovenz Memorial is called Life Gem. Life Gem allows for the ashes of a loved one or beloved pet to be compressed into a diamond that can then be worn in jewelry.

“This way you can be sure to always keep a loved one or pet close at all times,” Davey said.

Davey said that services for pets such as the ones they offer, aid in the grief process when a pet has passed away.

“It provides what a lot of pet owners need,” Burns said. “We’re all going to meet again at that rainbow bridge.”

North Central Veterinary Emergency Center receives accreditation

North Central Veterinary Emergency Center, on the Purdue North Central Campus in Westville, has received accreditation following evaluation by the American Animal Hospital Association. The evaluation includes a quality assessment review of the hospital’s facility, medical equipment, practice methods and pet health care management.

Only 15 percent of all small animal veterinary practices in the U.S. have achieved accreditation by the American Animal Hospital Association. In order to maintain accredited status, North Central Veterinary Emergency Center must continue to be evaluated regularly by the association’s consultants.

“NCVEC belongs to a select group of practices that are committed to meeting the highest standards in veterinary medicine,” said Anna Worth, the association’s president. “AAHA hospitals pass a stringent evaluation of more than 900 standards covering patient care, client service and medical protocols. By attaining accreditation, NCVEC is demonstrating its dedication to offering the best care to its patients and clients.”

Established in 1933, the association is the only organization that accredits veterinary practices throughout the U.S. and Canada, seeking high standards of veterinary care. Approximately 3,000 association-accredited practices pass regular reviews of its stringent accreditation standards that cover patient care, client service and medical protocols. For pet care information or referral to an AAHA-accredited practice, visit www.healthypet.com.

North Central, 1645 South US Highway 421, has been an accredited practice member of the association since 2003. For more information, call 219-395-9431or visit www.ncvec.pnc.edu.
