To the Editor:

‘Tis the season for friends, family and festivities… and according to the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute, December has the highest frequency of collisions of any month. Last year in Indiana, 135 people
were killed in collisions that involved an alcohol-impaired driver.

The partners of Project RAD (Responsible Alcohol Distribution) want all Hoosiers to “Arrive Alive in 2012,” so we are reminding everyone to drink responsibly at all times by designating a driver, calling a
cab or enjoying a holiday stay at a hotel.

In 2010 in Indiana, 24.7 percent of all fatal collisions were alcohol-related – almost 1 in every 4 accidents. Of the fatal collisions that were alcohol related, 75.1 percent involved a driver that was legally alcohol-impaired – 3 in every 4 accidents. But simple actions can reduce these numbers.

A designated driver is a person in a group of two or more drinking adults who agrees not to drink any alcoholic beverages and to safely transport the other group members home. A large group may need more than one designated driver. Designated drivers should not drink any alcoholic beverages and are therefore never the person least drunk.

If no one in your group can act as a designated driver, another option is to call a cab. Many worry about the money or leaving your car someplace and waiting until the next day to pick it up. A cab fare from a bar to home could be $25 and a friend or a cab ride taking you back to your car may take time – and isn’t that worth it when a DUI could cost you much more: fines, court costs, jail time, a suspended driver’s license, attorney fees, insurance rate increase, loss of a job or worse, the death of a loved one.

And you could always enjoy a holiday stay at a hotel. While it may cost a little more, you have peace of mind that your car and your friends and loved ones are safe. Most area hotels have special packages during the holidays that make a hotel stay an economical option. It is more fun to stay in a hotel than the local jail.

The holiday season is a time for sharing with friends and families. Be responsible and plan ahead and make this December a safe one.
