“Everyone has a yard. The parks are everyone’s yard. The parks are our playground.

“Parks have always been a place to have unstructured play and get fresh air. That’s why I am pursuing this career.

“Parks was something I always thought about,” she said.  “My career path and background is in science, with a Master’s in business.

“I always wanted to pursue this. And, just at the few meetings I have had since the mayor called me, I have seen a lot of familiar faces, which reinforces I will continue to work with all the great same people as well as meeting new people; that’s a very positive experience.

She starts this phase of her career in a few weeks after finishing her obligations as program specialist with the Lake Michigan Coastal Program of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.

She has spent a decade improving park land across the Northwest Indiana Region. It is her home turf. She is a Michigan City native and Chesterton resident.

“I’m excited to focus my time and energy on one city,” Orsburn said. She was selected as a key newcomer in the Mayor James Snyder administration.

“The park department has been without a consistent leader for a long time,” said Snyder as he announced her selection. That choice was reaffirmed with little opposition at the January Parks Board meeting.

“She is somebody local and doesn’t intend to go anywhere soon,” the new mayor said. He was among several officials of the administration showing support for her at the parks board meeting.

Also in her resume is experience as a resource specialist, projects coordinator and intermittent engineering assistant with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.

“I really want to look at how to improve the properties that exist,” said Orsburn, adding she also wants the department to pursue grant opportunities and increase opportunities with working with partners to improve the department.

She said she encourages residents to get involved, especially now as the department wraps up its master plan.

Orsburn has worked with the Portage parks department in the past on a variety of projects.

The parks superintendent position has been vacant since August when another non-area native, Chris Johnson, resigned the post to take another job. “I want to make our parks inviting and accessible. We’ll look at everything we can to ensure safety. Because everyone should feel safe in their own parks.”

The activities and regular Portage events will continue. “We’re a professional group and we’ll do a professional job,” Orsburn said.

“We want a welcoming environment.  The most simple thing may end up being the most important. I’m a Region girl, very much aware of the communities in Northwest Indiana.
