Nearly 300 photographs from 28 cities and towns in Indiana, Illinois, and Michigan were entered in this year’s garden photography contest held recently during the 9th Annual Gardening Show at the Porter County Expo Center in Valparaiso.

Best of Show and first place winner in the Wildlife in the Garden category, Jim Rettker said he had second thoughts about submitting his photo.  Now, he’s glad he did. Rettker has been a photo enthusiast since receiving a little box camera from his parents in the mid-1950s. Today, he prefers taking his Nikon 40DX on morning hikes to capture birds and other wildlife and schedules vacations around potential photo shoots.

“Our Best in Show is a picture that is sharply focused from top to bottom,” judges for the show, Dan Ruggaber, the 2011 Best of Show winner, and Bill Stocky, former president of Duneland Photography Club, said.
