The Portage High School Thespians / Theatre Department will present their spring musical, “The Wedding Singer,” for two weekends in April.

A 2006 Broadway musical-comedy based on the Adam Sandler movie of the same name, this nostalgic trip to the 1980s is brought to life by a cast of 50 PHS students and accompanied by a live pit band.

Performances are Fridays and Saturdays, April 20, 21, 27 and 28 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, April 22 at 2:30 p.m.  Tickets are $10.  Enjoy a performance and come dressed in your favorite 1980s attire, with prizes awarded each night for best dressed.  For more information, call 219-764-6126.

Early registration for Great Futures Family Bike Ride ends April 20th

Are you looking for a fun, outdoor activity the whole family can enjoy? Then register today for the “Great Futures Family Bike Ride”, a new special event hosted the Boys and Girls Clubs of Porter County.

The “Great Futures Family Bike Ride” is a non-competitive ride that will take place on the family-friendly Prairie-Duneland Trail on May 5. The ride is open to the entire community. Check in begins at 7:30 a.m. and the ride begins at 8:30 a.m. at the Chesterton trail head located between 15th Street and Jackson Boulevard.

The cost is $5 per individual rider or $15 per family.  T-shirts are available for an additional $10 each.  Join the fun and register online at www.bgcpoco.org. Early registration ends on April 20 for people wanting to purchase T-shirts.  Open registration will continue online until May 3. Helmets and close-toed shoes are required.

Free refreshment stations, maps, and rest areas will be available along the trail.  Free bike safety checks and helmet fittings are provided in the community area located at the Chesterton trail head.  Kids will enjoy the special appearances by Rascal the Railcat and horses from the Porter County Sheriff Department’s Mounted Posse.

Aqua Indiana and BMO Harris Bank are proud to be the presenting sponsors.  Proceeds from “Great Futures Family Bike Ride” will benefit the programs of Boys and Girls Clubs of Porter County.

Bound to Blossom 5K Fun Run/Walk

The Portage Township YMCA in support of St. Mary Medical Center will host its second annual Bound to Blossom 5K Fun Run/Walk at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, May 6.

The event will begin and end at the Y and utilize the “Rails to Trails”.  The flat course is paved for easy running and walking.  The race will be timed and first, second and third place medals will be awarded to male and female runners in each age category.

All participants registered by Friday, April 20 will be guaranteed to receive a Bound to Blossom T-Shirt.  Walk-in registration will begin at 7:30 a.m. and close at 8:15 a.m.

Participation supports the YMCA by improving our community.  Proceeds benefit YMCA programs that focus on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.  As a not-for-profit community service organization, the Y provides programs such as preventative wellness, preschool, childcare, summer camp, teen outreach and fitness.

Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) screenings are offered at St. Mary Medical Center, 1500 S. Lake Park Ave., Hobart.

PAD is the progressive narrowing of the arteries feeding the lower extremities. If you have leg pain you may have circulation problems. This test only takes a few minutes and involves taking blood pressure readings in the arm and ankle.

Purdue University Calumet’s Healing Circles suicide survivor monthly support groups will meet at 7 p.m., Thursday, April 19 at the university’s Couple and Family Therapy Center at 1247 169th St.

All suicide survivors and friends of survivors are welcome to attend. Admission is free. There are three “Healing Circles” groups: adults 18 & older, young adults 14-24 and Youth 9-13.

Eighteen-to-24-year-olds can choose to attend either the adults or young adults groups. Advance registration is required for the youth and young adults groups only.

An adult survivor and two therapists will facilitate each group, all of which meet simultaneously for 90 minutes.
