Valparaiso Community Festivals and Events is currently accepting proposals for local vendors to serve food at upcoming festivals.

Events include the Summer Rhapsody Music Festival on June 16 and August 18, Valparaiso Popcorn Festival on September 8 and the Valpo Brewfest on September 29.  All events will be held at Central Park Plaza in downtown Valparaiso.

Proposals must be made separately for each event and are due no later than Friday, May 4.  Submissions can be sent electronically to or by mail to VCFE, 162 W. Lincolnway, Valparaiso, 46383. Cinco de Mayo fundraiser for Jacob’s Ladder

Jacob’s Ladder Pediatric Rehabilitation Center will hold its Cinco de Mayo fundraising event Thursday, May 3 at the Sand Creek Country Club.  The event is from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. and features a silent auction, a fajita bar and margaritas.

A spring fashion show and dinner to benefit the don Quijote Scholarship Fund will be held on Thursday, May 10 at Restaurante don Quijote in Valparaiso.  Dinner will be served at 5:30 p.m. with the fashion show to begin at 6:30 p.m.

A selection of men’s and women’s fashions from Seasons on the Square, David’s Men’s Clothier and Bangles will be showcased.

Tickets are $40 per person for the dinner and show and are available at don Quijote Restaurant, David’s, Seasons and Bangles.  A cash bar will also be available.

The don Quijote Scholarship Fund was created to promote and develop Spanish language and cultural enrichment for high school students through study or travel.  The fund is affiliated with the Porter County Community Foundation.  The don Quijote Foundation recently awarded travel study scholarships to three local high school students.

Rain or shine… it’s Summer Time at Valparaiso Parks Discovery Camps. Located at Rogers-Lakewood Park, every week is theme-based at the 122 acre site and filled with an always changing variety of activities.

Campers get a chance to play sports, make arts and crafts, go fishing, learn archery, take nature hikes, and go boating. There will be wacky Wednesdays, a scavenger hunt, “car” races, double dare and more.

Discovery Camps generally run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday from June 12 to August 9, with before and after camp care offered. The summer camps are available for boys and girls, preschool through eighth grade.  Campers are divided into age-appropriate groups.
