Brandon Miller, director of the Portage Resale Shop, addressed the Portage Exchange Club at its April 18 meeting.  He discussed the mission that the resale shop pursues, giving away to those in need as much as they sell.  Last year they gave away about 2,000 coats, over 100 pairs of shoes and 42 mattresses that had been donated by the U.S. Coast Guard.

“That’s why I love what I do,” Miller said.  “We like to be the middlemen, distributing needed and interesting things.  We believe that no one should be without shoes or a warm coat and that no child should have to sleep on the floor.”

The average volunteer at the Portage Resale Shop is a 68-year-old woman.  “Our volunteers are phenomenal.  We have 30 volunteers who donate about 800 hours per month.  We are good stewards of our resources.  We don’t spend one penny on advertising.”

Miller said the constant needs are for fresh socks and underwear, pots and pans, and bedding such as sheets and blankets.  They do not take console TVs, medical devices or anything that is broken or “past its useful life.”  They work hand in hand with other entities such as the trustee’s office, Gabriel’s Horn, the Portage Food Pantry, a number of local churches and other groups, he said.
