The Portage Exchange Club honored its winners of the 2012 Youth of the Year and ACE Award at the May 9 breakfast meeting.

Youth of the Year is based on academic accomplishments, extracurricular involvement, community service, citizenship and attitude.  Kacie McGuire was selected as winner from an outstanding group of young people.  Among her many accomplishments are maintaining a 4.5 GPA, winning the Portage High School (PHS) 2011 Distinguished Young Woman title, lettering in tennis and volleyball, being named an academic scholar-athlete and  being in the National Honor Society.

McGuire has gone on annual mission trips every summer since 2006 to help in blighted areas and participates in monthly mission outreach days with Real Life Church.  She also helps with Challengers League baseball.  McGuire plans to attend Anderson University and major in nursing and minor in psychology.

The ACE Award honors a student who has turned his or her life around and graduated despite life events and situations that would have appeared to prohibit this.  Andrew Bauer overcame several disabilities in order to change his life, find a mission in the PHS theater program and achieve graduation.  He was unanimously selected by the PHS guidance department as the choice for the ACE award.

Bauer plans to attend Indiana University Northwest (IUN) and major in theater production.  He wants to fight the problem of teen suicide by using social media.  To this end, he has already created several YouTube videos.

Bauer was also selected as first place ACE award winner at the Exchange Club district level.

Al Bumbales, owner of Portage’s Ace Hardware, continues to support this project with sizable monetary donations.

Both students received a plaque and a check from the Portage Exchange Club and were to attend the district convention in LaPorte on May 11 and be honored there.
