May is Mental Health Month and Mental Health America of Porter County (MHAPC) is wearing green ribbons to spread the word about mental health and how important it is to overall health.

Each May, green ribbons are worn to raise public awareness, reduce stigma and show support for those living with mental illness.

Mental Health Month was created more than 50 years ago by MHAPC’s national organization, Mental Health America, to raise awareness about mental health conditions and the importance of mental wellness for all. In the 1800s, the color green was used to brand people who were labeled “insane”.  The mental health community decided to continue using the color green but with a completely different focus.  Today, green signifies new life, new growth, and new beginnings.
