Portage Township Food Pantry board members were delighted by the generosity and support they received from the community during the annual Postal Service Food Drive held Saturday, May 12.

Nearly 8,000 pounds of food was donated by people throughout the community and gathered by members of the postal service who delivered it to the Portage Post Office.  The food was then loaded by members of the Portage High School ROTC Unit, driven to both Nativity and Portage Township Food Pantries, where it was unloaded by other teams of ROTC students.

In addition to the ROTC members, the pantries want to thank all Portage postal carriers, especially Judy White and Drew Dvorscak, coordinators of the drive.

The pantries were delighted with the community’s generosity, as they are still attempting to serve a large number of families do to continual unemployment.  Items especially needed now are personal-hygiene products and paper goods, which families cannot purchase with food stamps.

Donations can be brought to the Portage Food Pantry on Friday mornings. It is located in the back of the Neighborhood Educational Opportunities Center (formerly the Portage Adult Education Center) at 5391 Central Ave.

Monetary check donations may be made out to the Portage Township Food Pantry and mailed to P.O. Box 1582, Portage, 46368.
