STUDENT ARTISTS WANTED
Tour de La Porte award contest
The La Porte Hospital Foundation is looking for student artists to design an award for half-marathon runners at this year’s Tour de La Porte.  The 11th Annual Tour de La Porte will be on Saturday, Aug. 25 and Sunday, Aug. 26 at Soldiers Memorial Park in La Porte. Tour de La Porte includes several different competitive and casual bike, run and walk events for the entire family. The award art contest, however, will focus solely on the half-marathon 21K chip-timed competitive run.  Awards will be given to the top three half-marathon finishers in each age category. The award art contest is open to all first- through 12th-graders. One winning design will be chosen from an elementary school, middle/junior high school and high school submission. Judges will choose the winning designs based on the connection their artwork has to the cause of Tour de La Porte. FALLEN OFFICER BLOOD DRIVES

Throughout the month of June, the American Red Cross will participate in the statewide Fallen Officer Blood Drive Campaign.  This is the sixth year the Red Cross will host blood drives across Indiana to honor fallen officers and raise awareness of the need for blood. Janice Starnes, whose husband Sgt. Daniel Starnes was killed in the line of duty in 2001, founded the campaign and continues to organize it each year.  “Most encouraging,” Starnes said, “is that the blood drives continue to grow and our officers are not forgotten thanks to the people who come to give blood in their memory.”  Last year, every county in Indiana held at least one Fallen Officer blood drive and a total of 5,000 units of blood were collected.  This year, the goal is to surpass 2011 collections and honor men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice. “Unfortunately, three new names were added to our list of Indiana fallen officers since last summer.  This blood drive campaign helps ensure they are not forgotten while also raising awareness of the dangers officers face every day and the need for blood,” said Starnes. NIPSCO recently announced expanded programs for homes and businesses that invest in energy efficient equipment by adding new money and energy-saving product rebates. “With the addition of new types of rebates, we hope to encourage more people to choose high efficiency equipment for their homes and businesses,” said Kevin Kirkham, director of energy efficiency programs. “Since our rebate program began in 2008, more than $8 million in rebates have been given to customers.” Savings for homes include the Energy Efficiency Rebate program, a cash-back rebate offer that helps NIPSCO residential customers better afford high efficiency options when replacing electric and/or natural gas equipment. Qualifying products include furnaces, boilers, water heaters, heat pumps and programmable thermostats. Rebates range from $20 for a programmable thermostat to $500 for a ductless heat pump.  Applications and a list of qualifying products, including brands and models, are available at or by calling 800-721-7385.  Commercial and industrial natural gas customers now have access to additional incentives as well. By combining the new Custom Incentive Program and Prescriptive Incentive Program, eligible businesses could receive more than $1 million per year for upgrading existing equipment or systems. For commercial and industrial electric customers, additional rebates are available through NIPSCO’s partnership with Energizing Indiana, a statewide energy efficiency effort. SECRETARY OF STATE RECOGNIZED
Lifetime Achievement Award for Connie Lawson
Secretary of State Connie Lawson was recognized by Mental Health America of Indiana (MHAI) with a Lifetime Achievement Award. The organization recognized Lawson for her legislative efforts as a state senator to raise awareness of mental health disorders and to improve the quality of patient care. Lawson received the award at the MHAI’s annual Mental Health Symposium held recently in Indianapolis. “Mental Health America of Indiana does great work on behalf of Hoosiers and I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished together,” Lawson said.  “I’ve always worked to provide aid to Hoosiers in need of medical attention.  I’m proud of what was accomplished in the General Assembly on behalf of those suffering from mental health issues, and remain committed to advocating for access to mental health drugs and services going forward.” During the 2012 Legislative Session, then-Sen. Lawson authored Senate Enrolled Act 24 to ensure mental health patients receive high quality care. The legislation, which will go into effect Sunday, July 1, requires criminal background checks for applicants of social work and counseling licenses. In addition, marriage and family therapist applicants must have at least two years of post-degree clinical experience. Lawson also succeeded in adding the regulation of pain management facilities to the list of topics being studied by a General Assembly interim committee. MHAI is a statewide organization, with over sixty local chapters.  MHAI is a broad-based group of citizens, consumers, individuals in recovery, families, and professionals advocating for the mental health of all citizens. The national Mental Health of America organization is the oldest and largest nonprofit organization addressing all aspects of mental health and mental illness.

There’s still time to enter your photos of the places and faces of Indiana agriculture in the 2012 Indiana State Department of Agriculture (ISDA) Photo Contest. The deadline has been extended until Saturday, June 30, so join the competition and possibly have your photo framed and displayed in the Offices of the Lt. Governor’s Family of Business and featured in the 2013 Hoosier Ag Today calendar. Contest winners will also be special guests at this year’s Indiana State Fair, where they will be recognized during the Celebration of Agriculture event.
