Summer concert, film series finale

Westchester Public Library’s free concert and family film series will conclude at 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 10, at the bandstand in Thomas Park with the Pinhook Bogtrotters, followed bythe filmThe Adventures of Tintin” at dusk (about 8 p.m.) 

The Pinhook Bogtrotters are musicians from Porter and La Porte counties who present good time songs to bring back memories of days gone by. The Bogtrotters play their music on an autoharp, ukulele, fiddle, accordion, penny whistle, hurdy-gurdy, dulcimer and mandolin. They also lead anyone who is interested in easy, old-time, social dances.

The Adventures of Tintin” is based on a series of comic books created by Belgian artist Herge. “The Adventures of Tintin” is rated PG and has a running time of 104 minutes.  Tintin books are available at both Thomas and Hageman Libraries.

Those who attend these events are invited to bring lawn chairs and picnics, blankets and bug spray. Focus on health at Taltree

During August, Taltree Arboretum and Gardens, 71 N. 500 West, Valparaiso, will focus on health. Experts will lead hikes and yoga classes, present fresh and healthy cooking demonstrations, and reveal ways our pets enrich our lives.

  • Saturdays at 1 p.m. Kim Thornberry, massage therapist at European Spa in Valparaiso, will do a 30-minute presentation on healthy living in the Railway Garden Depot. Following her presentation, she will give free hands-on samples of her massage work until 5 p.m.
  • Saturdays at 8:30 a.m. Suzanne Chick presents a one-hour Hatha Yoga class in the Meyer Memorial Pavilion.
  • Saturdays Aug. 18 and 25 from 3 to 4 p.m. join certified chef David Thornberry for cooking demonstrations featuring only the freshest ingredients.
  • Wednesdays from 9 to 10 a.m. Suzanne Chick presents a one-hour Gentle Yoga class in the Meyer Memorial Pavilion.
  • Sunday, Aug. 12 from 1 to 2 p.m. Cory Muro, executive chef at Valley Kitchen and Bar, will offer insight into the importance of procuring food from local farms as he demonstrations how to assemble two fresh dishes.
  • Saturday, Aug. 11 at 11 a.m. Toni Bianci, pet partner team evaluator from the Delta Society, will give a 30 minute presentation on what it takes to be a therapy dog, what therapy dogs do, and what health benefits they provide to humans.
  • Wednesday, Aug. 15 at 10 a.m. join docent Vickie Jostes for a healthy and relaxing hike through Taltree’s wetlands.
  • Wednesday, Aug. 22 at 10 a.m. join horticulture manager Patty Stimmel for a hike to Taltree’s Native Plant Garden and Monarch Waystation to see butterfly habitat at its busiest.

The Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) of Porter County will present Healthy Hearts in August. The importance of a healthy lifestyle and seeking healthcare assistance when appropriate will be emphasized. Participants will receive a free healthy snack.

Hobart Chamber pig roast fundraiser is Aug. 19

Summer Rhapsody Music Festival offers ticketed seating for Aug. 18 concert

Valparaiso Community Festivals and Events (VCFE) is offering ticketed seating at the Summer Rhapsody Music Festival Concert on Saturday, Aug. 18.

The gates will open at 6 p.m. and the concert will kick off at 8 p.m. General admission is free and ticketed seating is available for $25 per person or $45 per couple. Those who choose ticketed seating will enjoy access to premium reserved seating area and a special commemorative gift. Tickets are limited.

All attendees will have access to the beer and wine garden and food tent for purchases.
