CareEXPRESS opens in Valparaiso

Porter Regional Hospital will open its second CareEXPRESS Urgent Care Center at the Valparaiso Medical Center, located 1900 Roosevelt Road (the corner of Roosevelt and Glendale) in Valparaiso on Monday, Nov. 12.  The center will be open Monday through Friday from 5 to 9 p.m. and on Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

CareEXPRESS will offer patients walk-in care for illnesses, injuries, school or sports physicals, x-rays and lab work – and no appointments are necessary. It will also offer patients on-site lab and x-ray services.

Additionally, Porter Regional Hospital’s CareEXPRESS in the Chesterton Medical Center at 650 Dickinson Road in Chesterton is open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. seven days a week and also offers on-site lab and x-ray services.

Porter Health Care System has two hospital campuses and seven outpatient facilities serving Porter, Lake, LaPorte, Starke, Newton and Jasper counties.  For more information, visit .

Snowflake Skate tickets on sale

Snowflake Skate, a party for girls and their dolls, will take place at Deep River Waterpark Ice Skating Plaza on Saturday, Dec.  8, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Participation is limited so advance tickets are required.

Snowflake Skate is an ice skating party for girls age 6 and older and their dolls or stuffed animals who love to skate. Girls are encouraged, but not required, to bring a doll or teddy bear to join the fun both indoors and out. Parents should be prepared to baby sit dolls and animals who do not wish to go skating or make crafts.

Girls and their “friends” will skate on the outdoor plaza and learn skating moves from the Deep River Waterpark Snowflake Skater. They will have their photo taken and make a souvenir to take home to help them remember the day. The morning will conclude with lunch in the eatery and a group skate routine on the ice.

Tickets for girls are $15 which includes admission, skate rental, all activities, pizza, drinks and dessert. Tickets for adults are $12 which includes admission, skating (if they choose), and food.

Tickets will remain on sale until Dec. 6 or sold out. Purchase tickets by calling 219-769-PARK, Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. or going to the Lake County Parks business office, 8411 E. Lincoln Highway (U.S. 30).

Join Jane Walsh-Brown for Mad About Mysteries on Wednesday, Nov. 14 and Saturday, Nov. 17 at the Westchester Township History Museum, 700 W. Porter Avenue, Chesterton.  Both programs begin at 2 p.m.  Refreshments will be served.

The Salvation Army of Porter County will host its annual free Thanksgiving Dinner on Thursday, Nov. 22 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at The Salvation Army Corps Community Center, 799 Capitol Road (U.S. Highway 6, one block west of State Road 149) in South Haven.

This event has become an annual tradition for those in Porter County to enjoy a meal and share a time of fellowship on this great holiday.  The dinner is free of charge.  Everyone is invited. The event allows those without the means or a family to enjoy a “family style” Thanksgiving Dinner with neighbors and friends.

Delivery for shut-ins is also available if reservations are called in by Nov. 16, 4 p.m. at 219-762-9191.

Toys For TotsThe Valparaiso Parks Department along with Dunes Leathernecks Detachment Marine Corps League and Toys for Tots will host the second annual Touch a Truck for Toys for Tots Event on Saturday, Dec. 1, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Central Park Plaza in downtown Valparaiso.  There is no admission charge.

Kids of all ages will enjoy the opportunity to explore their favorite police cars, fire trucks, snow plows, emergency vehicles, and more.  There will be free hot cocoa and cookies. Those who donate to Toys for Tots may enter for a chance to win a prize.

Please bring a new unwrapped toy for any age to donate to our local Toys for Tots Chapter.  Monetary donations also appreciated.
