Local business owners and supervisors gathered for a recent Sunrise Seminar at Riley’s Railhouse in Chesterton to learn about the effects of not investing in workforce training.

Hosted by the Chesterton/Duneland Chamber of Commerce, the seminar featured guest speaker Theresa Valade, CEO of Success Trek, Inc., a local consultancy that partners with small- to mid-sized organizations to improve management effectiveness and organizational processes.

Citing the 2011 Globoforce Ltd. Report, Valade explained that “87 percent of all employees are not satisfied with the results of their work at the end of most weeks, and 70 percent of workers don’t know what to do to support their organization’s strategies and goals.”

Additionally, Valade shared that 73 percent of workers say their organization’s strategies are not translated into specific tasks they can execute, and 81 percent of workers aren’t strongly committed to their workplace’s goals.

According to Valade, for businesses with less than 20 employees, these untrained, “disengaged” workers can cost organizations 25 percent of their salaries each year in lost productivity. Employees categorized as “actively disengaged” increase that cost to 50 percent.

Valade offered seminar attendees a series of no-cost management techniques for employers to engage with disconnected employees, including establishing clear expectations tied to organizational goals; developing open and frequent avenues of communication; and taking ownership of their own leadership development.
