Holidaze arts and craft show

Don’t wait till black Friday. Start your shopping early at the huge Holidaze Arts and Craft show at the Porter County Expo Center in Valparaiso on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 17 and 18.

The expo center will be a winter wonderland themed for Christmas with lights twinkling and holiday music ringing. All in attendance will have a chance to win one of 100 door prizes donated by vendors and awarded throughout both days.

Over 160 vendors from five states will be on hand filling two buildings. Everything for home decor, garden and special presents can be purchased. Unique items include stained glass, floral arrangements, purses and fine clothing. Many food items will be available, including dips, candy, wine, cheese, desserts and many more.

Show hours are Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Admission is $1. For more information, visit

The Portage Township Food Pantry, 5391 Central Ave., has announced its wish list.

The list includes baby food and formula, diapers, beans (dry and canned), canned fruit, canned meats, canned soup, canned vegetables, cereal, condiments, instant potatoes, muffin mix, macaroni and cheese, pasta, pudding and jello, ramen noodles, rice, pasta and “helper” side dish mixes, spaghetti sauce, toilet paper, cleaning products and any other non-perishable item.  Monetary donations are also appreciated.

The pantry is located on the back side of the Portage Adult Education building.  Donations are accepted on Fridays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.  For more information, call Judy Mollway at 219-742-3141.

Sugar Plum Visions

The Chesterton Art Center, 115 S. Fourth St., is sponsoring the Sugar Plum Visions gingerbread house exhibit. All are invited to create a house out of gingerbread and other edibles. Then, bring their designs to the Chesterton Art Center the week of Nov. 19. The public will cast votes for their favorite gingerbread houses, with the proceeds going to the Westchester Neighbors Food Pantry.

Each person or group that enters will receive a gift certificate from the art center. All gingerbread creations will remain on display until the week before Christmas.

American Legion Post 260 in Portage is hosting a free dinner to honor Veterans, life and the community on Thanksgiving, Thursday, Nov. 22 from 1 to 4 p.m.  All are welcome.  The event is sponsored by community businesses and volunteers.

Model railroad swap and sell meet

Ron Jackson’s 23rd Model Railroad Swap and Sell Meet will be held Saturday, Nov. 24, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at St. Bridget Parish Center, 101 Center St. in Hobart.

All scales featured.  There will be 50 tables, a cash raffle and door prizes.  Food and beverages will be available for purchase.

The Valparaiso compost site, 2150 W. Lincolnway, and the Boone Grove compost site, 546 S. 400 West, will be closed Thursday, Nov. 22 through Sunday, Nov. 25 for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Both sites will reopen Monday, Nov. 26 and hold regular season hours for the rest of the week through Saturday, Dec. 1 after which both sites will close for the season.

Regular season hours for the Valpo site are 9 a.m.to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. Regular hours for the Boone Grove compost site are noon to 5 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.

Hobart Family YMCA to host Life Line Screening

Hobart Family YMCA is hosting Life Line Screening on Monday, Dec. 3.  The screenings consist of Life Line Screening’s signature ultrasound services to identify blocked arteries in the neck, an irregular heart rhythm, abdominal aortic aneurysms and hardening of the arteries in the legs.

These screenings are recommended for anyone 50 and older, or 40 and over with cardiovascular risk factors. They are non-invasive, painless, safe (with no radiation) and affordable. Allow 60 to 90 minutes to complete. Results are mailed directly to participants.
