HURRICANE SANDY

United Way Recovery Fund

Northwest Indiana is a community that cares and one that knows firsthand the devastation caused by natural disasters.  During the 2008 Northwest Indiana floods as well as 9/11, the earthquakes that hit Haiti and Japan and in response to the Great Recession, regionites give from their hearts. In that same spirit and in response to the widespread devastation by Hurricane Sandy along the east coast, Lake Area United Way, in partnership with the United Way network around the world, is pleased to share a means by which local residents and organizations can provide aid to the people affected in these hard-hit areas. The United Way Hurricane Sandy Recovery Fund has been established to address near-term and long-term recovery efforts.  The United Way of New York City will manage this multi-state regional fund which will be utilized by United Ways in 11 states. Three ways to help the United Way respond are to: donate online by visiting to donate to the United Way Hurricane Sandy Recovery Fund; use your phone to text RECOVERY to 52000 to make a $10 donation; or promote the fund link and text-to-give options in social media and promote the use of 2-1-1 and for family and friends seeking help and those looking for opportunities to volunteer. Every dollar will make a difference.

DEED SOLICITATION

Recorder warns of deceptive letters

Porter County Recorder Jon Miller is warning the public to be aware of a deed solicitation letter being mailed to local homeowners by not one but several different companies. These companies market their services of providing a copy of your deed in the form of a “Deed Processing Notice” or other such request, for a fee of $86 per copy. The letters also say an additional fee of $35 will be required for late processing. “The services that these companies offer are very inflated, since the same copy may be obtained for the price of $1 at your county recorder’s office,” said Miller.  Most deeds are only one page in length, he added. Company names that send out these solicitation letters include Local Records Office, Records Retrieval Department and Secured Document, among others.  Miller requested concerned Porter County citizens drop off or mail copies of their solicitation letters to his office. These copies will then be forwarded to the office of Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller and to the Better Business Bureau. To find out how to obtain a copy of your deed, contact the Porter County Recorder at 219-465-3465.

MORE THAN JUST FORMULA

WIC program clomid pct

The Indiana Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program is well known as a resource to provide infants with formula at no cost, but health officials want Hoosiers to know that many more benefits, like breastfeeding education and support and improved access to fruits and vegetables, are available to them through WIC. “Indiana WIC is a great program for Hoosier moms and we would like to see more people take advantage of the free resources we can provide,” said Eldon Whetstone, deputy director of the WIC program at the Indiana State Department of Health. “Many WIC recipients stop requesting benefits once their child is no longer eligible for formula, but kids are eligible to receive benefits up to the age of five, helping to support a healthy start during those critical early years of development.” The Indiana WIC program provides vouchers for supplemental foods to low-income pregnant, breastfeeding and non-breastfeeding postpartum women and to infants and children up to age five who are found to be at nutritional risk. Indiana WIC also provides health care referrals, nutrition counseling, and health screenings and assessments. Whetstone encourages pregnant women and guardians of young children – mothers, fathers, grandparents, foster parents – to contact their local WIC clinic to determine if they are eligible for benefits. To find a local WIC clinic or learn more about WIC eligibility requirements, visit or call 800-522-0874. To learn more about the Indiana State Department of Health, visit .

Officials at the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) report a record number of customers using the myBMV.com website to complete transactions.  BMV customers recently completed the 2,000,000th online renewal of 2012 vehicle registrations.  When combined with renewals by mail, by phone through the BMV Customer Contact Center and through BMV partner locations, more than 70 percent of all registration renewals for 2012 have been completed outside of a license branch. According to BMV Commissioner R. Scott Waddell, “Although we made outstanding improvements in customer service at our license branches, we also know that many customers would prefer not making a trip to the branch at all, especially for simple transactions like annual registration renewals.  Renewal by mail was the first popular option but has been surpassed by online service through the enhanced myBMV.com website.” Waddell added that by the reduced number of registration renewal customers in the license branches, the branch associates are able to better service those customers who must visit a branch to complete a more complicated transaction, especially this year with the record number of customers needing to renew their driver’s licenses. He noted that popularity of the “customer choices” and the outstanding service in the license branches have contributed to the BMV’s most recent overall customer satisfaction rating of 96.3 percent.  For more information, visit
