Be a Santa to a SeniorThe Hometown Holiday Celebration continues with a series of progressive open houses hosted by the Duneland Chamber of Commerce. The first event will be held on Thursday, Nov. 29, and open houses will continue every Thursday leading up to Christmas (Dec. 6, 13 and 20).

From 4 to 7 p.m., shoppers will enjoy $5 drink and appetizer specials at participating restaurants, including Lucrezia, Popolano’s, Sage and Uncle Joe’s Bar and Grill. Participating retailers will be offering extended holiday hours and holiday sales and specials.

Shoppers are invited to visit the Duneland Chamber of Commerce, 220 Broadway, on Thursday, Nov.  29 between 4 and 8 p.m. for cookies, punch and maps to holiday shopping and dining tours.

Chesterton’s European Market will be hosting its annual Mistletoe Market on Saturday, Dec. 1, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Westchester Intermediate School.  Features include artisan and culinary gifts for all ages, holiday music, fresh food and sweets, fresh Christmas trees and greens and photos with Santa for children.

Santa Claus will be in his house in Thomas Centennial Park every Saturday leading up to Christmas (Dec. 1, 8, 15 and 22) from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 to 3 p.m.

Christmas Celebration in Portage

A celebration of Christmas will take place Saturday, Dec. 1 at Willowcreek Middle School, 5962 Central Ave., Portage, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Families will be able to enjoy free activities and free pictures with Santa while enjoying local children’s choirs and orchestras.

This event will benefit the Marine Corps Toys for Tots.  Attendees are encouraged to bring a new unwrapped toy or a cash donation that will benefit area children with toys for the holiday.

Kiwanis will be serving chili, hot dogs, baked potatoes and more at the event.  Most items are $1 and all profits will go to Toys for Tots.

At the conclusion, Santa will lead the Portage Christmas Parade from the middle school to Gilbert Park for a tree lighting ceremony. For more information, call Shannon at 219-781-3295.

Portage Township Trustee Brendan Clancy and his staff are asking for help for children in need this Christmas season through The Santa Cause.

The Santa Cause is a Christmas program for the needy children of Portage Township. There are two ways businesses, organizations and individuals can help.  First, contact the trustee’s office to help a child / children and purchase gifts based on their wish lists. Or, donate gift cards.  Gift cards need to be received by Dec. 10 to allow the staff to purchase gifts for the children.
