Sponsored by Mental Health America of Porter County (MHAPC), the annual giftLIFT program connects people whose lives are impacted by mental health with the opportunity to receive gifts for the holiday season.

According to Executive Director Mary Hodson, “giftLIFT 2012 included a record number of gifts —2,295—fulfilling the wishes of 575 individuals, including 67 families, from newborn to 76.  This program is possible through the impressive efforts of an entire community.”

Eleven Porter County businesses provided space for a tree displaying gift wishes, while other businesses collected toiletries and wrapping paper. Financial contributions from Porter-Starke Services Foundation, Design Organization and several anonymous donors helped fill wishes. In-kind donations included hand crocheted scarves created by a MHAPC volunteer.  Some 55 volunteers—ages 10 through 75—helped staff accomplish this monumental task.

The wishes are simple and recipients grateful.  Hodson tells of receiving a tearful hug from a young mom, thanking her and the MHA staff for helping her make Christmas for her children. Her three large bags were filled with clothing, boots, socks, bedding and yes toys for the kids.

“This hug and thanks belongs to every business and individual who gave time, talent and treasure and who chose to reach out to members of our community in need.  I am so impressed with the generosity of our community and send heartfelt thanks for making giftLIFT 2012 a success.”
