Delcie Martin, a lifelong DeMotte community member, turned 100 on Dec. 18. She celebrated with a huge party two days earlier at Oak Grove Christian Retirement Village with her two sons and their families, friends and her neighbors in the community. Four further generations of family ate cake and reminisced with Martin throughout the afternoon. Photos from her youth and of her family provided a collage of her life.

Martin received special recognition from the Chicago Cubs, of whom she has been a fan throughout her life, and from the mayor of Valparaiso.

Martin had an ear-to-ear smile as her friends and family stopped by and saw her. There was not a moment of quiet, with over 100 people in attendance.

Martin grew up on a farm south of Kouts and learned to work at an early age, helping to plow the fields. She also worked at Valparaiso University. Martin married and started her family (which now includes great-great-grandchildren), and has outlived three husbands.

When she was turning 88, Martin moved to Oak Grove. She was one of the first seniors to come and live at Oak Grove in the assisted living area, where she still resides. She attributes her longevity to healthy eating and spiritual involvement.

Martin participates and volunteers whenever possible at Oak Grove. The most recent project was making special Christmas goody bags for the social workers that serve the seniors at the hospital.

Martin can often be found at the computer, which she learned to use in her 90s, emailing with her family and friends. She also attends many of the special events held at Oak Grove each month.

Her continued vitality is a true testimony that living right can help one stay healthy. She continues to be a “social butterfly” and looks forward to turning 101.
