There are 11 more months this year. Take the time now to decide what you want to make happen for yourself in 2013.

There are 11 more months this year. Take the time now to decide what you want to make happen for yourself in 2013.

Here we are at the end of the first month of the year.  Were you one of the 45 percent of the population who made a New Year’s resolution?  You have probably heard the statistics that between 60-75 percent of people who make resolutions don’t keep them after the first week.

I have heard the woes of the reckless resolutions so I resolved to quit making resolutions, with the exception of one. I resolved to remember to write 2013 instead of 2012 before the month was over. I am happy to say that I have written 2012 instead of 2013 just one time. So I am doing fine there. Now if I can figure which day of the month we are on, I will be all set.

In consideration of resolutions, though, it seems that the word itself is daunting. It carries a deafening gavel that strikes with a resounding boom of “I must do this.” No wonder so many people give up before they get started. So why not drop the idea of making resolutions and instead ask yourself the question, “What do I want to accomplish this year?

When you ask yourself that question, allow yourself to think, to dream, and to come up with several ideas. Jot down your thoughts, and then separate them into two or three categories.  You may find you have some things you want to accomplish involve improving your health, your finances, or your personal relationships.

Next, write what you want as if it has already happened. Write as though you are writing a letter to a best friend about what happened in your life in 2013–though you are really writing to yourself. There is power in writing what you want. Putting your desires on paper reinforces your thoughts. It helps solidify your belief that what you want, you can make happen.

I see the power of positive thinking attracting positive results every day. I also know that positive actions taken with a positive attitude and thinking makes a strong combination of energies that can get you what you want.

If you are one of many people want to lose weight in 2013, then write in your letter to yourself that you are so proud that you lost (fill in the blank of how many pounds you want to lose) this year. Then take positive actions.  Make a grocery list of what you intend to buy, cutting out some foods that you know will not help you lose weight. Then stick to your list and do not let yourself be tempted to buy the impulse goodies.

If you want to find a better job this year, then write in your letter to yourself how much you love your new job and that the pay is such an improvement. Then take action, such as updating your resume or making a list of companies you would like to work for.

There are 11 more months this year. Take the time now to decide what you want to make happen for yourself in 2013. Then write it in a letter to yourself as if it is already the end of the year and you have accomplished what you wanted.  Next, do something that will get you going in the right direction.

Keep your thoughts positive, and continue each month to take steps toward achieving what you want this year. If a setback comes along, work through it, then reread your letter and take action to move forward.  This year is a great year to make your life better, by accomplishing something that you set out to do.
