Whispering Pines

Here at Whispering Pines Health Care Center our homelike setting creates a feeling of community that benefits residents and brings comfort to families.

There comes a time in everyone’s life when we are faced with the difficult decisions of health care for ourselves or a loved one. We are looking for a place, like home, where our lives can be nurtured. Those comfortable places where you can relax and heal, regain function, make memories and enjoy leisure time.

Here at Whispering Pines our homelike setting creates a feeling of community that benefits residents and brings comfort to families. Whispering Pines employees make it their individual and collective responsibility to demonstrate a caring spirit, encourage friendships, and always provide the best possible health care. By caring for one another, we not only foster a healing environment but also demonstrate what life is truly about.

Whispering Pines was developed in response to the needs of the local community. Porter County Council of Church Women, an interdenominational group, recognized the need for a home for elderly individuals who could no longer live independently. Their vision was to provide hope for those needing assistance. They achieved this vision and developed one of the first senior living communities in Indiana.

From the original 31 beds senior living community that opened in 1964, Whispering Pines expanded twice to its current 150 bed capacity. In 1983, the Porter County Council of Church women again responded to the communities’ needs and opened Pines Village apartments, to fill the need for assisted and independent living. When the assisted living unit was developed, Indiana Retirement Communities became a separate corporation allowing Whispering Pines to focus on providing skilled nursing care.

Since 1964, Whispering Pines has developed into a home where skilled nursing, including rehabilitative therapy services, are available 24 hours a day.

Additionally, again in response to community needs, the inn was developed for care of residents suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. Expanded in 1997 and renamed TIMBRE (That I Might Be Richly Esteemed), Whispering Pines offered the first structured programming and care for Alzheimer’s residents in the county.

Another community service first began as a small hospice unit in the early 1990s. The Mary E. Bartz Hospice Center

was named in 1994 after one of the founding church women. It was the first in-patient hospice facility in Indiana.

Today, Whispering Pines still holds true to its original mission to serve the community, remaining nonprofit and putting people before profits.
