Learn about Diana of the Dunes

Just in time for the fall season of ghost stories, Janet Zenke Edwards, author of “Diana of the Dunes: The True Story of Alice Gray,” will speak at the monthly meeting of the Portage Historical Society at Tuesday, Oct. 15, 7 p.m. in the Hickory Hollow Room at Woodland Park in Portage.

Edwards will share facts behind the legendary story of Alice Gray, who became known as Diana of the Dunes, one of Northwest Indiana’s favorite folklore characters and subject of a popular local ghost story.

QuickBooks workshop

Due to demand, the Northwest ISBDC is again partnering with Anna Sheets of Accounting Made Simple to offer a two-part workshop on QuickBooks essentials. The sessions are from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Fridays Oct. 18 and 25 at the Purdue University North Central Graduate Building, 600 Vale Park Road, in Room 20.

Participants receive class materials and instructor follow-up as well as a certificate of completion.

Local authors sought for book fair

The Merrillville branch of the Lake County Public Library, 1919 W. 81st Ave, is seeking authors for a Local Author Book Fair to be held on Saturday, Nov. 16 from 1 to 4 p.m.  The event will give authors a chance to meet patrons and sell their books.

Westchester Public Library has updated the Early Literacy Stations at both the Thomas Library, 200 W. Indiana Ave., in Chesterton and Hageman Library, 100 Francis St., in Porter.

AfterSchool Edge Stations have also been set up at both libraries.  A library card is not necessary to use the stations, but is encouraged so children may check out books to take home that will further enhance their education. The Early Literacy Station is a dynamic all-in-one learning station for children ages 2-8. It requires no Internet connection, so it is safe and secure.  There are two Early Literacy Stations in the children’s department at Thomas Library, one station in the serials department at Thomas Library, and one station at Hageman Library.  All stations are available in both English and Spanish.

The AfterSchool Edge is the first complete digital learning solution that is specifically designed for out-of-classroom use. While usage fosters independence, content covers 50 titles which include math, science, music, art, history, geography, reading, writing, and more. There are two AfterSchool Edge Stations in the serials department at Thomas Library and one station at Hageman Library.  The AfterSchool Edge Stations are English only. Taltree Arboretum & Gardens is now taking group reservations for tractor-drawn hayrides and pond-side bonfires for the month of October. Group bonfires are available every Friday and Saturday night in October.

There are five bonfire locations available from 7 p.m. until 10 p.m. Groups can bring their own food and drink, but no alcohol. Roasting sticks will be provided. S’more and hot dog packages will be available. Groups can enhance their experience by booking a hayride during their time at Taltree. Additional group hayrides are available Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Fridays from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

This experience will take guests into the depths of the arboretum to explore areas that most visitors don’t see. Both group opportunities are for up to 30 people at one time. Saturday night bonfires are $75 per group. Hayrides are $120 per group. The s’mores and hot dog packages are an additional $5 per person.
