Two separate initiatives are bringing rain barrels to area residents.

First, the Recycling and Waste Reduction District of Porter County along with Porter County Parks and Recreation and MS4 (Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System) are collaborating on a project to bring more rain barrels to Porter County.

The two departments have worked together to launch a website through Upcycle Products that allows citizens to choose and conveniently order from a variety of rain barrels. The public will be able to pick up the rain barrels on Sunday, May 18 at Sunset Hill Farm County Park, 775 Meridian Road.

Rain barrels can bring several long-term benefits to the community such as saving residents money, while avoiding run off that can be detrimental to local water sources. According to the EPA, use of a rain barrel can save 1,300 gallons of water throughout the summer.

According to MS4 County Coordinator and Porter County Parks and Recreation Board President Rich Hudson, “We have used a variety of methods for storm water collection over the years. The rain barrels are the most functional and look much nicer than alternative methods.”For more information or to order a rain barrel for pick up on May 18, visit upcycle-products.com and select the Porter County IN order form in the right-hand column.

Also, the city of Valparaiso is offering residents the opportunity to purchase rain barrels at a reduced rate.

The 55-gallon rain barrels are available to the first 200 participants who live within Valparaiso city limits (and pay Valparaiso stormwater fees) at $20 each. The cost is $51 for an additional barrel or to those outside the service territory.

Order by May 26 for pick up on May 31 at Central Park Plaza from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. For ordering details or more information, visit Valpo.us/MS4. The home page of the application serves as dashboard, giving you key information on reports, timesheets and unsubmitted phone tracker with phonetrackingapps.com expenses
