Burger Wars, a bracket-style contest to crown the best burgers in Porter County, is underway.

The Epic Eight, identified as having the best burgers in the county through social media mentions and surveys, will battle head-to-head until a winner is crowned. They are: Burgerhaus, Valparaiso; Franklin House, Valparaiso; Industrial Revolution, Valparaiso; Octave Grill, Chesterton; Piggies and Cream at the Depot, Kouts; Pikk’s Tavern, Valparaiso; Village Tavern, Porter; and Wagner’s Ribs, Porter.

Avalon Springs Rehab Open House

Avalon Springs Health Campus, 2400 Silhavy Road in Valparaiso, is hosting a special Rehab Open House on the third Tuesday of every month from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. in the Avalon Springs Health Club Gym.

The event is free to the community.  It offers opportunities for area seniors with upcoming surgeries to meet the therapy and nursing teams, receive information about how Medicare and insurance companies can work to pay for a Rehab to Home stay in one of Avalon Springs’ private suites and clear up any unanswered questions they may have.

Children’s art classes

The Chesterton Art Center, 115 S. 4th St., is offering five week-long summer art classes for children ages 4-13 beginning in June 16.

Each class runs Monday through Thursday and includes a theme. Children ages 4-8 will meet from 9 to 11 a.m. and those aged 9-13 will meet from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The cost is $60 per week for art center members and $65 for non-members.

Each week will include a finished painted canvas along with other projects per the theme.  Weekly themes are:  Beach–June 16-19; Jungle–June 23-26; Squiggles & Zigzags–July 14-17; Out of This World–July 21-24; and Play With Your Food–Aug.11-14

The Porter County Master Gardeners Association and Purdue Extension Porter County are sponsoring Garden Walk 2014 on Saturday, June 28, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
