Community members can sample foods prepared by nursing home and retirement community chefs at the Porter County Taste of Care to be held Thursday, June 19 from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Porter County Expo Center, 215 Division Road in Valparaiso.

The event features a food competition that brings together area senior communities. Ron Donahue, director of business development at Prompt Ambulance, said the event not only showcases the chefs’ culinary skills but also raises funds for Honor Flight Chicago and Porter County Triad ramp projects in Porter County.

“The annual cook-off has different categories such as appetizers and desserts with celebrity judges deciding which is best,” said Donahue, who is also vice president of Triad. “(Porter County Sheriff) David Lain is the emcee and the money is donated to our non-profit under the Legacy Foundation to be split between the two.”

The Porter County event continues to build on the Taste’s roots, which were established in Lake County by Prompt Ambulance in 2009.

“Last year, we raised $10,000 and had more than 1,000 people,” Donahue said.

He said Porter County Triad is supporting the ramp program through Porter County Aging and Community Services as it is a reflection of Triad’s mission to serve seniors.

“Triad is a partnership between organizations and law enforcement that finds ways to help seniors in the community,” Donahue said. “Our board is comprised of 16 people and we look at what seniors might need. There is no cookie cutter mold for needs. We feel the ramps are a really good fit and can make a big impact.”

Tickets are $10 and available at the door. For more information on the Taste of Care event or sponsorships, contact Donahue at 219-545-1796 or ron@promptambulance.com or visit www.tasteofcare.net.
