Buffett and his Coral Reefer Band will perform at Coyote Drive-In in Fort Worth Texas on the evening of June 19, and the concert will be broadcast live at drive-ins nationwide, like the 49er.

The owners of the 49er are bringing a band to the 49er to be the opening act before Buffett’s concert is shown on the big screen. They will also have food and alcohol sales at the adults-only event.

The gates open at the 49er, located at 675 N. Calumet Ave. in Valparaiso, at 4 p.m. on June 19. The live band will play from 5 to 7:30 p.m., followed by the Jimmy Buffett concert. All vehicles must be in place by 7 p.m. so the concert is not interrupted.

Burger Wars, a month-long competition to pick the best burger in Porter County, recently ended with Octave Grill in Chesterton winning and the Franklin House in Valparaiso being chosen runner up.

Celebrate summer with Picnic En Blanc

Taltree Arboretum and Gardens, 450 W. 100 North in Valparaiso, is celebrating summer with Picnic En Blanc on Saturday, June 28.

Guests are required to dress from head-to-toe in white and will be treated to an evening of surprises, tours, raffles, dancing and more. Tables and chairs will be provided. Pre-dinner activities begin at 4 p.m. followed by dinner at 6 p.m.

Guests should bring a white-themed picnic dinner with all the essentials to make an extravagant picnic display. Attendees can also pre-order dinner. The pre-order dinner option includes choice of sandwich with gourmet side salads, homemade dessert and drink.

Event tickets are $35 per person and pre-order dinner tickets are $55. Table for eight ticket purchase is available for both options, offering a $40 savings. Pre-order dinner tickets should be purchased no later than Thursday, June 19. General event tickets are available until Thursday, June 26.

Photography Club Exhibit at Deep River

Members of the Lake County Parks Photo Club will have more than 40 photographs on display at Wood’s Historic Grist Mill, located in Deep River County Park, 9410 Old Lincoln Highway in Hobart during the month of June.

The exhibit includes the works of Victor Grimes of Gary, Sandor Voo of Wheeler, Jim Rettker of Crown Point, Beverly and Tom Zmigrocki of Griffith, Victoria Jostes of Hobart, Dennis Gray of Highland, Roger Wills of Merrillville, and James Conrad of Valparaiso. Some photos are offered for sale.

Fall master recycler class

The Recycling & Waste Reduction District of Porter County invites Porter County residents and those who work in the county to participate in the fall Master Recycler Program.

The program is scheduled Thursdays, Sept. 11 through Oct. 30 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Porter County Government Administration Center, 155 Indiana Ave., Valparaiso.  The course will feature guest speakers and optional field trips that will help students gain environmental knowledge beyond the blue bin.

Class size is limited to 30.  A fee of $30 will help cover the cost of course materials and is due upon acceptance into the program.  Participants commit to 30 hours of volunteer time to educate and inspire others in their community to reduce waste in the home and at work.
