 “Grease” themed car show fundraiser

Cruise to Avalon Springs, 2400 Silhavy Road in Valparaiso with your classic cars and motorcycles on Wednesday, July 30 from 4 to 7 p.m. for a “Grease” themed car show fundraiser.

Join residents and community members for a ride down T-Bird Motorcycle Alley, have a juicy burger or a hot dog at the Rydell High Grill or enjoy old-fashioned ice cream sodas at the Pink Ladies Soda Shop.

Five Star DJ and Karaoke will present the best hits of the 50s era amid the Indiana Beverage Beer Garden. Attendees are encouraged to dress in 1950s era themed clothes for the event.

The Car Show and T-Bird Motorcycle Alley welcome all make, models and years of cars and bikes.  There is a $10 entrance fee per car/motorcycle which includes two beer tickets, two meals, goodie bag, official car show participant certificate and a chance to win trophies and prizes.

The 2014 Mayor’s Charity Beatles Bash in Valparaiso will be held Friday, July 25 at Central Park Plaza featuring the band American English to commemorate the Beatles’ 50th anniversary in the U.S.

Six local charities will benefit from proceeds of the Beatles Bash including Valparaiso Firefighters Local 1124 – Hoosier Burn Camp; Project Neighbors – Neighbors Place; VNA Phoenix Center – Healing Garden; Rebuilding Together Valparaiso; PACT; and Housing Opportunities

Burkett workshop

Internationally recognized painter Helen Burkett will offer a three-day workshop entitled “Pandora on Fence” at the Chesterton Art Center, 115 S. 4th St., on Aug. 5, 6 and 7 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.

Burkett will be teaching a transparent watercolor painting technique.  The Florida-based artist is known for her realistic botanicals and has been featured in both the American Artist and International Artist magazines.

The Valparaiso Police Department will be participating in the 31st Annual National Night Out on Tuesday, Aug. 5 from 6:30 to 9 p.m.

Valparaiso Police Chief Michael Brickner is inviting community members to organize an activity for the event. Valparaiso police officers will be visiting the special activities planned in each neighborhood to show their support, including officers from the K-9 team, bicycle unit, patrol division and detective division.
