Valpo Night Ride

Registration is available for the 4th Valpo Night Ride taking place on Saturday, Aug. 23.

The 15-mile organized bicycle ride takes cycling enthusiasts on a night ride in and around the city at their own safe pace.  Organized by the Valpo Parks Department and the city’s Pathways Committee, the event offers fitness activity, food and fun.

Price is $40 per person after Aug. 8.  Participants ages 10 and under must be accompanied by adult or in a pull-behind or tandem bike.  For more information or to register, stop by the Valpo Parks office at 3210 N. Campbell St., call 219-462-5144 or visit .

Westchester Public Library will resume its reading tutoring service for children preschool age through grade 12.

Individuals interested in volunteering as a reading tutor may fill out an application available at the circulation desks at Thomas Library, 200 W. Indiana Ave., Chesterton, and Hageman Library, 100 Francis St., Porter.

Registration as a volunteer tutor or student will begin on Friday, Aug. 15 in the children’s department, Thomas Library at 6:30 p.m.  Tutoring sessions will begin in September.

Appreciation Day Picnic

All Veterans and military personnel and their families are invited to the first Appreciation Day Picnic on Sunday, Aug. 24, from 1 to 5 p.m. at Festival Park in Hobart.

The Recycling & Waste Reduction District of Porter County invites Porter County residents and those who work in the county to participate in the fall Master Recycler Program.

The program is scheduled Thursdays, Sept. 11 through Oct. 30 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Porter County Government Administration Center, 155 Indiana Ave., Valparaiso.  The course will feature guest speakers and optional field trips that will help students gain environmental knowledge beyond the blue bin.

Class size is limited to 30.  A fee of $30 will help cover the cost of course materials and is due upon acceptance into the program.  Participants commit to 30 hours of volunteer time to educate and inspire others in their community to reduce waste in the home and at work.

Raffle supports foundation

Frontline Foundations, Inc., a non-profit substance abuse treatment center, is the beneficiary from proceeds raised from RV raffle ticket sales sponsored by Camp-Land RV in Burns Harbor.

The Jayco Jay Flight Travel Trailer includes a refrigerator, stove, shower, hot water heater, air-conditioner, twin bunks, microwave and exterior awning at a suggested retail value of $13,136.

The price of one raffle ticket is $50 and only 500 tickets will be sold. Raffle tickets may be purchased through Sept. 12 at Camp-Land RV, 1171 Lions Drive in Burns Harbor and Lakeside Wealth Management Group, 407 W. Indiana Ave. in Chesterton.

The drawing will be held at Frontline’s Third Annual Hooked on Art Live Street Art Festival, held in Thomas Park in Chesterton on Saturday, Sept. 27  Winner need not be present to win.
