The Indiana Department of Homeland Security (IDHS) and other partner agencies are encouraging Hoosiers to register and participate in this year’s Great Central U.S. ShakeOut, which will be held at 10:16 a.m. on Oct. 16.

The ShakeOut is the largest earthquake drill in the central United States. It is led by local emergency management agencies, IDHS, the Indiana Geological Survey, the Indiana Department of Education, the Central United States Earthquake Consortium, the Federal Emergency Management Agency and U.S. Geological Survey. The Great Central U.S. ShakeOut is an opportunity to practice safety measures in the event of a large earthquake.

A total of nearly 1.9 million participants have registered so far, and currently Indiana is in the lead with nearly 395,000 registrants. Other states in the region include Alabama, Arkansas, Illinois, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio, Oklahoma and Tennessee. Indiana had the most registrants last year with nearly 550,000.

At 10:16 a.m. on Oct. 16, participants should drop to the ground, take cover under a table or desk and hold on to a table or desk as if a major earthquake were happening. Practicing early is the key to protecting yourself and others during an actual earthquake.

The days leading up to the ShakeOut are a great opportunity to create a preparedness kit that can be used for a variety of situations, not just earthquakes. Disaster kits should include water and food for all members of a household, first aid supplies, flashlights and batteries, necessary medication, items for pets and extra clothing.
