MICHAEL BRICKNER,  Porter County Sheriff

Michael Brickner, Chief of Police

Michael Brickner is the Chief of Police of the Valparaiso Police Department.  He is a 27 year veteran of the police department.  He has been chief for 10 years.  He has held the positions of patrol officer, patrol sergeant, detective sergeant and detective lieutenant.  He has been a certified instructor in radar and DUI enforcement and has served as the department’s Field Training Officer Coordinator and Public Information Officer.  He currently oversees a department consisting of 67 full time and part time employees.  He is married with two children ages 11 and 12.

Chief Brickner is a graduate of Chesterton High School, Ball State University, Northwestern University Center for Public Safety Police Staff and Command and the Police Executive Leadership Academy.  He is currently the president of the Indiana Association of Chiefs of Police, chairman of the Porter County Safe Schools Commission, a member of the Board of Directors for the Northwest Indiana Law Enforcement Academy and Indiana Law Enforcement Accreditation Commission.

Chief Brickner has received numerous awards including Valparaiso Police Department Honorable Mention Awards for outstanding police work, and the department’s Police Officer of the Year in 1998 and 1999.  In 2006 Chief Brickner was the recipient of the “William Sudberry Memorial Leaders Leader Award.”  This award is given to the top law enforcement executive in the state by the Indiana Association of Chiefs of Police.  In 2010 Chief Brickner was presented with the Community Mental Health Award for his contributions to the mental health community by Porter Starke Services.  In 2011 he was recognized by the National Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve as a “Patriotic Employer” for his support of employee participation in America’s National Guard and Reserve Force.

Under the command of Chief Brickner, the Valparaiso Police Department has been recognized as one the most progressive police departments in the State of Indiana.  In 2004 the department was recognized by Calumet College as “Police Department of the Year” for initiating the first Child is Missing program in the Region.  In 2007 the department was recognized by the International Association of Chiefs of Police as one of the top 25 police agencies in the world and a finalist for the “Webber Seavey” award for the “Valpo Alert Notification System.”  In 2010 the Valparaiso Police Department became one of only 13 departments in the State of Indiana to be accredited through the Commission on Law Enforcement Accreditation (CALEA).  The department successfully just received its CALEA re-accreditation certification in July 2013.

Just a few of the programs initiated by Chief Brickner and successfully in operation at the police department are:

1.        Project Safeway, a program designed to address aggressive driving in neighborhoods.

2.        Adopt A School, a program that has an officer assigned to every school in the city limits.

3.        G.R.E.A. T., a program taught by a police officer to 7th graders.

4.        Citizens Police Academy

5.        Junior Police Academy

6.        Tip 411 program

7.        Coffee with a Cop

8.        Senior Care Program

Chief Brickner as the CEO was instrumental in the move from a police station occupied for 150 years to a new, state-of-the-art police facility.  He was also the lead person in the effort to consolidate the 911/dispatch system which is a state mandate.

Mike Brickner is an active member of Calvary Church and the Valpo Kiwanis organization.  He coaches his son’s and daughter’s basketball team and is the head coach of the Washington Township boys 8th grade basketball team.
