Calumet Park Cemetery (CPC) was incorporated in 1928 and is still owned and operated by the same families.  The cemetery consists of over 400 acres of land with 160 currently developed.  In fact, at the current rate of usage and projecting into the future, CPC has enough land to last over 600 years before closing its doors to new property owners.

There are over 70,000 property owners and over 47,000 interments, entombments and inurnments that have already taken place in its 85 year history.  In 2004, Calumet Park added its first funeral home and, in 2014, Rendina Funeral Home became part of the Calumet Park family.  And, with the crematory already in place, CPC is equipped to handle every form of final disposition.  There are sections set aside for most religious affiliations and nationalities, and should anything more than a passing interest arise for green burials, CPC has an area laid out and ready to accommodate such families.

There are over five miles of paved roads, three mausoleums, a lake and three ponds (one with a beautiful fountain) and just recently, a geo-thermal heating and air system has been installed for the mausoleum complex and for the 11,000 square foot office.  This project will greatly reduce the carbon footprint of CPC.  Added to this company concern for the environment, CPC plants a tree in the name of every person’s memory whose funeral is at Calumet Park’s Funeral Chapel (funeral home).

There is a beautiful veterans section with a portion dedicated to the Battle of the Bulge soldiers.  In this part of the vet section is placed the veteran columbarium which is for the final placement of veterans who prefer cremation but would like to be in the veteran section.  (See photo of kneeling soldier.)

A unique program has been designed for veterans from CPC that cuts over $5,000 off the price of a traditional funeral including the funeral service, casket, vault, grave, opening and closing, memorial marker and more.  There is no such program like it in the entire region, if not the entire country.  CPC wants to show its appreciation for the sacrifices made by our service members in a tangible and helpful way, and this program accomplishes exactly that goal.

There is a community event for each season at CPC.  In the autumn, there is a hay ride and pumpkin painting/face painting event.  Just before Christmas, there is an angel tree program where participants get a glass angel to hang on the tree at the funeral home and then take home as a keepsake after the holidays.  In June, there is a fishing event for kids 10 and under at the Meditation Pond.  In late July/early August, there is a live butterfly release program that draws over 300 people each year to share in a heartfelt program of live music and the release of live butterflies.  All of these programs are free; CPC covers the cost.

St. Agnes Adult Day Service Center        

St. Agnes Adult Day Service Center, located at 1859 Harrison Blvd. in Valparaiso, is an adult day service center. We are open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

St. Agnes provides safety, health care, personal care and meaningful activities for adults who cannot stay home by themselves during the day. St. Agnes allows a participant’s family to work, run errands or simply take a break.

Participants can come one day a week or five days a week. Most of the people we care for have Alzheimer’s disease or some form of dementia. Our goal is to keep them working at their highest potential for as long as possible. We do this through activities that provide mental and physical stimulation.

In 1980, Monsignor Charlebois of St. Paul Catholic Church had a dream to build an adult day center where members of our community could come together to reminisce, sing, socialize and feel worthwhile through planned activities. In August 1997, his dream became a reality. We opened our doors with one adult participant and two staff. Today, St. Agnes Adult Day Service Center has 10 staff members and 75 trained volunteers who provide care and safety for up to 35 participants a day.

“The house was starting to run me,” she said. “I was always worried about the roof or something breaking. I decided I didn’t need all that was in that house and I didn’t like to cook,” she smiled. “I wanted to do other things.”

Mary enjoys Pines Village activities, such as playing cards, Sunday vespers and preparing food for the local Café Manna soup kitchen. She’s also on the movie committee that selects films for residents to enjoy together on Saturdays.

“There are so many things to do. There’s also painting and drawing. I see people down there who have never done art in their lives and now they learn they’re good at drawing,” Mary said. She also appreciates having a full-time chaplain and a Celebration Center to host events.

Thinking Ahead

Mary was thinking of her children when she chose Pines Village. “Because this is a rental, they won’t have to worry about selling my place when I’m gone,” she said. The continuum of care at Pines Village means that Mary also has access to home health services and additional care in the future if she needs it.

Mary has lived at Pines Village for two years now and she’s enjoying her freedom as she admires the changing seasons outside her balcony door. Always a fan of water, Mary’s apartment overlooks a wooded area with a pond and manicured walking paths. “It was fall when I first saw this place and when they opened the balcony door, I almost cried. I couldn’t believe how beautiful it was. I also like being able to hear the children’s voices from the YMCA nearby.”
