National Preparedness Month may be over, but it should not stop Hoosiers from thinking about preparedness the rest of the year. Changes in the season, as well as the changing needs of Indiana families, could impact emergency plans.

Maintaining preparedness supplies is just as important as putting them together. It’s a good idea to check preparedness kits when the seasons change.  This way Hoosiers can prepare for the different hazards that come with the seasons. It also provides the opportunity to take stock of what food and items need to be replaced.  Other things to keep in mind:

• Throw out any canned good that becomes swollen, dented or corroded.

• Use foods before they go bad and replace them with fresh supplies.

• Place new items at the back of the storage area and older ones in the front.

• Add or remove items as the needs of your family change throughout the year.

• Spread out the purchase of preparedness items throughout the year to reduce the impact on your budget.

Look for opportunities to get involved in programs or activities that can make your family and community safer.

• Great Central U.S. ShakeOut: This annual earthquake drill will be taking place on Oct. 16 at 10:16 a.m. in your community. It’s a great opportunity to discuss emergency plans and preparedness not only for earthquakes, but for all hazards.

• CERT: Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program educates people about disaster preparedness and trains them in basic disaster response skills. Contact your local Emergency Management Agency to see what programs are available near you.

• Volunteer Opportunities: Check with your local public safety agencies, such as EMS, fire or law enforcement, to see if there are any volunteer opportunities available.  Lending a helping hand to those who protect you can strengthen the entire community.
