They served in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard, leaving their families at home and putting their own lives at risk.

The 49 veterans who now live at Pines Village Retirement Communities were honored with a special service on Veterans Day. All of the veterans received a flag flown over the United States Capital in honor of their service.

“We thank you for your service to our great nation. Words aren’t enough to show our gratitude,” said Laurie Mullet, chief executive officer of Pines Village Retirement Communities, Inc.

Justin Mount, regional director for the office of Sen. Joe Donnelly, assisted in presenting the flags. Donnelly had arranged for the flags to be flown over the Unites States Capital on Sept. 19.  Donnelly also shared his gratitude in a videotaped message.

“We live in a much different world today than we did five, six, seven decades ago. It’s much safer today,” said William Kuehl, a Navy veteran and Pines Village resident who was honored at the service.

Fellow veterans and residents George Costakis and Alphonsus Wiseman agreed. Both had served in the Navy and now live at Pines Village. Wiseman served during the Battle of Okinawa and Costakis served for more than two decades, including more than a year recovering in a naval hospital.

“As citizens, it is our obligation to honor our veterans till our last days as we should never forget their sacrifice. It is our duty to remember. Our residents have seen the world change dramatically during their lifetimes. We’re honored to share these years with them,” said Mullet. More than 70 fellow residents and family members joined in the Veterans Day program.

Located in Valparaiso, Pines Village Retirement Communities is currently home for 252 seniors in 151 apartments and 68 homes, including Pines Village Apartments and Meridian Woods.
