While walking through downtown Valparaiso, it does not take long to realize just how amazing it is with the ever-present welcoming atmosphere and all of the neatly kept shops bustling with business.

Kernels and Kones is no exception.

Opening only two years ago, this little shop has made a huge impact on the community with its one-of-a-kind popcorn, ice cream and homemade chocolates.  It didn’t always have the wonderful chocolates though. It wasn’t until December 2012 that five-year veteran chocolate maker, Kim White, joined forces with Kernels and Kones to bring the magic of chocolate to downtown Valpo.

Even more incredible than the treats is the story behind them.

“I had already been making it [chocolate] and everybody seems to love it,” White said. “It makes people smile.”

But during the early times of her chocolate-making business, White had a big reason not to smile – cancer. But she fought though the struggles and kicked cancer to the curb.

A few years later, White decided to try her hand at selling her chocolate at events so she arranged to have a booth set up at the Oz Festival in Chesterton. Her chocolates were a huge hit and not long after that, she tried her luck at the Chesterton European Market where she gained even more fans.

Kernels and Kones was clearly the perfect place to display her amazing chocolates and after having a partnership with them for several months, White bought the business and took over running the store.

White has no plans to move the store or open a new one at this time.

“No, I like where I am now and enjoy what I am doing here in this store,” she said.

Her advice to new business owners is to take the time to do some research and know who your demographic is and where they are. Even though she didn’t plan on starting a business like Kernels and Kones at the time she did, White is offering something unique to the bustling downtown area and enjoying every minute of it.

With the holiday season just around the corner, there are bound to be a lot more smiles to be made since Kernels and Kones also has Christmas popcorn tins and chocolate boxes available.

“My favorite is the garlic parmesan,” said White. “But the K and K mix is the most popular.”

Kernels and Kones brings joy and smiles to Valpo with its delicious popcorn and chocolate. The inviting atmosphere keeps customers happy and gives them a reason to come back over and over again.

Everybody can find something they like there, especially chocolate lovers and popcorn enthusiasts, but coming soon coffee addicts will be able to get their fix with the store’s delectable new line of coffees.

There are plenty of popcorn possibilities at the store since they have 28 varieties of popcorn available, including Crème Soda, Bacon Cheddar and White Cheddar. They also have an assorted range of chocolate goods from fudge to chocolate covered marshmallows on a stick.

There is sure to be something for everyone on your holiday wish lists this year and these gifts will definitely put a smile on each face, because that is what White does best.

Kernels and Kones is located at 56 Indiana Ave. in downtown Valparaiso, right next to Greek’s Pizza and across from the Valparaiso Park Plaza. The shop is open Tuesday and Wednesday 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Thursday through Saturday 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Sunday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
