National Cardiac Rehabilitation Week recognizes the role cardiac rehabilitation plays in reducing the devastating effects of heart disease. This year, National Cardiac Rehabilitation Week was celebrated at Porter Health Care System February 8 through 14.

Porter’s Cardiac Rehabilitation program is certified by the American Association of Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation and provides the tools to help patients return to their regular activities after experiencing a cardiac event.

According to Patty Neely, the program’s supervisor, the Cardiac Rehab program is divided into three phases with the first phase beginning when a patient is in the hospital. After a patient experiences a cardiac event, such as a heart attack, open heart surgery or angioplasty, associates from Cardiac Rehab work on inpatient rehabilitation, as well as assess the patient’s readiness to begin the outpatient program and provide education on steps to take once they are discharged.

Phase Two, or the acute phase of rehabilitation, begins two-to-three weeks after the patient leaves the hospital, focusing on improving the patient’s cardiac fitness and providing education on preventing future cardiac events. “Along with monitoring their exercise, we provide patients with education on risk management,” Neely said. “Plus, being in a group setting offers the opportunity for extra support from people who have experienced the same type of cardiac event.”

“All of the nurses in Cardiac Rehab have had a background in a telemetry field, whether it was in the ICU, the emergency room, or a cardiac unit,” Neely continued. “Our entire staff is also trained in advanced cardiac life support so if there is an emergency, we can administer the best care until the emergency medical services team arrives.”

Phase Three, or the maintenance program, is designed to assist cardiac patients as they return to normal daily activities. The third phase is also open to other patients, as long as they obtain a physician referral. “We have people who may have risk factors for heart disease that desire an exercise program catered by medical professionals,” said Neely. “With Cardiac Rehab, they have a team that can answer questions, monitor their vitals, and forward that information to their physician.”

In an effort to reach the community before they experience a cardiac event, the Cardiac Rehab staff participates in community awareness events, including Porter’s Healthy Hustle 5K which is coordinated and run by the rehab staff. “We are more than an exercise program,” said Neely. “Cardiac Rehab is about providing the tools to others so they can improve their quality of life, as well as arming them with the education they need so they don’t end up back in the hospital with the same issues.”

Porter Health Care System has two hospital campuses and seven outpatient facilities serving Porter, Lake, LaPorte, Starke, Newton, Marshall and Jasper counties.
