The NorthShore Health Centers is hosting an “Easter Eggstravaganza” event for the community on Saturday, March 28 from 1-4 p.m. The event will include an Easter egg hunt for the kids and will give them a chance to take pictures with all of their favorite characters, including the Easter Bunny.

Collected eggs will be exchanged at the end of the hunt for candy. Children ages 1-12 can enter into a raffle to win either $100 or a new bike. Due to the incredible turnout of over 900 participants at last year’s Easter egg hunt, which took place at the Scottsdale and Lake Station NorthShore locations, the event has been moved this year to accommodate those in attendance and to create more space.

This year, the hunt is being held at the Boys & Girls Club located at 5895 Evergreen Ave. in Portage. Here, the event can be held inside to avoid the problem of unpredictable weather. The Eggstravaganza is sponsored by NorthShore Health Centers and the Boys & Girls Club of Porter County, while the event characters are sponsored by Fairly Fairy.

NorthShore Health Center is a not-for-profit community based health and education center providing healthcare and dental services to everyone including the uninsured and underinsured community of Northwest Indiana. Our mission is to ensure that each individual has a medical home and access to the highest quality healthcare, regardless of gender, age, race, social or cultural standing and/or ability to pay.

Over the past two years, NorthShore has expanded their community involvement to benefit the health of the areas we serve. Each year, NorthShore participates in national events such as Give Kids A Smile, Women’s Health Week, Men’s Health Week and National Health Center Week by offering discounted medical and dental services for men, women and children.

They offer discounted services in July and August for their Back to School Fair, October for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and November for National Diabetic Month. NorthShore also offers many onsite education programs such as their Prenatal Care Program, Family Care Program and Diabetic Education Groups.

In addition to providing quality health care, NorthShore looks for ways to provide families in the community with a safe, fun place to bring their children and enjoy themselves by hosting events like the Easter Eggstravaganza and similar events around Halloween and Christmas.

NorthShore Health Centers’ other services include family practice, pediatrics, OB/GYN, behavioral health, radiology, urgent care and dental care. Their medical centers accept most major insurance plans, but they also offer an affordable self-pay option for anyone who is uninsured.

NorthShore is also an enrollment site for Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act/Health Insurance Marketplace. By offering a wide range of coordinated services, we able to continuously work towards our goal of providing accessible health care and illness prevention and education to improve the overall health of our patients and community.

Opportunity Enterprises’ Simply Amazing Market is blooming with festive Easter baskets, candy, fudge and decorations this holiday season. This year, the Simply Amazing Easter Open House will be held on Saturday, March 28 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at OE’s main facility located in Valparaiso. The Market employs OE’s amazing clients who prepare homemade fudge, popcorn, and package everything in house.

In collaboration with Purdue University North Central’s business ethics class, the market will also host an Easter egg hunt beginning at 9 a.m. and free pictures with the Easter bunny from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. during the open house.

Retail Associate Brenda Kotys, has been employed at the Market nearly four years. She has been preparing for the open house with OE’s amazing clients and was the creator of the new flavor of the month, “Jelly Doughnut.” Kotys attends Purdue University North Central where she will be receiving a degree in human resources this May.

“Our ethical leadership class needed to complete a service project this semester and the class threw some ideas around about what we would like to do. I suggested we do something to bring awareness to our organization and the developmentally disabled population we serve. Everyone is excited to be putting on a community wide Easter egg hunt in coordination with our amazing market,” Kotys said.

The class has volunteered to stuff plastic eggs for the egg hunt taking place on March 28 during the open house. OE is accepting gently used or new plastic eggs donations. Donated eggs can be dropped off this week at the front desk at OE’s main facility or at the Simply Amazing Market at 2801 Evans Ave. in Valparaiso.

OE works to maximize self-sufficiency and enrich the quality of life for individuals with disabilities.  OE serves over 1,100 adults and children with disabilities in Porter County and throughout Northwest Indiana.  For more information, visit www.oppent.org.
