She has lived in Portage for the last 14 years with her husband Dino, and the couple have four beautiful children ages 9 through 16.

To those who know her, one word comes to mind when describing Degard – SURVIVOR. This is because she has combatted numerous forms of cancer since she was merely 5 years old, and her tenacious fighting spirit has helped her weather even the darkest of storms. And she has always put everyone else, especially her children, before herself.

Autumn and her ever-expanding army, made up of friends and family

At the age of 5, Degard was diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare type of cancer that resulted in a tumor developing behind her left eye. Against the odds she came out on top, although treatment left her mostly blind in one eye. Over the course of the next 25 years or so, Degard would face various battles with cancer including of her cervix, stomach and liver.

In June of 2013, after several months of struggling with a cancerous tumor on her liver, Degard was pronounced cancer-free for the first time in what seemed like forever. However, less than one year later she would be diagnosed with breast cancer and just several months ago she was told by doctors that she had yet another cancerous tumor on her liver.

As if that was not enough, Degard’s father passed away from liver cancer in May of 2014.

Needless to say, Degard and her family can use some support both financially and emotionally. So that’s what we’re planning to give them.

We’re planning an event for Saturday, April 11 from 1-5 p.m. at Deep River Church of Christ in Merrillville where there will be food and fun for the whole family. One of our goals is to raise funds to help offset the cost of Autumn’s medical bills, but our other goal is to bring people together – friends, family, neighbors and strangers – to show Autumn how many people have her back in her latest battle.
